Der Tomatin 14y Port Cask ist seit 2014 fixer Bestanteil der Standard-Reihe der Highland-Brennerei. Wir haben hier keine Vollreifung, sondern ein Finish. Leider gibt es von offizieller Seite keine Information, wie lange das Finish dauerte. Bei der Suche im Internet wird man zwar fündig, jedoch gibt es eine deutliche Diskrepanz bei den Angaben. So variiert die Nachreifung zwischen 12 Monaten, 18 Monaten und sogar zwei Jahren. Die Variante mit einem Jahr Finish wurde am häufigsten genannt und klingt plausibel. 

Wie auf der Verpackung und am Flaschenlabel zu lesen, wurden Tawny Portfässer verwendet. Laut der Unternehmens-Homepage sollen bis zu 50 Jahre alte Portweine in diesen Fässern gelagert worden sein. Der Whisky wird mit 46% ohne Kühlfiltration und in natürlicher Farbe abgefüllt. 

Aussehen
Dunkles Gold, helles Bernstein.

Nase
Rund, ausgewogen und zugleich kräftig präsentiert sich der Geruch anfänglich. Das Finish im Portwein bringt vor allem fruchtige Aromen von Erdbeeren, Preiselbeeren und Sauerkirschen, die über eine angenehme Säure verfügen. Weiches Toffee sorgt zugleich für eine wohlwollende Süße in der Nase. Dahinter zeigen sich grüne knackige reife Äpfel, Vanille und Kuchenteig. Dies könnte von der Erstbelegung in den Bourbonfässern herrühren. Der Abschluss wird von Milchschokolade mit erhöhtem Kakaoanteil begleitet. Der Alkohol meldet sich immer wieder zwischendurch mit einer gewissen Frische und einem leichten Prickeln in der Nase. 

Insgesamt ist es eine eher hellfruchtige Nase, die von säuerlichem Beerenobst und süßen Aromen regiert wird. Klassische Portaromen, wie getrocknete Früchte, dunkle Beeren, Leder, Tabak und so weiter sucht man hier vergebens. Dies muss aber auch nicht immer sein und finde ich positiv.

Geschmack
Leichtes und weiches Mundgefühl. Die 46% sorgen für einen durchaus angenehmen Antritt. Überraschend ist die stark dominierende Süße, die vor allem vom Toffee stammt. Und nun entfaltet sich das Portfinish zu seiner vollen Pracht. Viel dunkelfruchtigere und intensivere Port-Aromen im Geschmack als vorher im Geruch. Nun finden sich Rosinen, getrocknete Datteln und Aprikosen, süßcremiges Pflaumenmus und reife rote Trauben mit schöner Restsüße. 

Danach folgt eine moderate pfeffrige Schärfe, die von einer nicht zu starken Würzigkeit der Fässer begleitet wird. Etwas altes Leder, dunkle Schokolade und ein paar getrocknete Tabakblätter finden sich ebenfalls geschmacklich wieder.

Abgang
Am Ende gewinnen immer mehr leicht bittere, tanninhaltige und zugleich trockene Aromen der Eiche. Die Frucht der Trauben nimmt immer mehr ab, zugleich auch die intensive Süße aus dem Geschmack. Das Finish ist von mittlerer Lebenszeit.

Fazit
Nicht allzuviel erwartet und positiv überrascht worden. Die Kombination aus anfänglich fruchtig säuerlichen Aromen in der Nase zu dieser schönen Süße mit den dann doch volleren Aromen vom Portwein bis hin zum nicht allzu herb, trockenen Finish gefällt mir durchaus. Ein nicht kompliziertes, filigranes aber sehr gefälliges Geschmacksprofil, dass Spaß macht.

Tomatin 14y Port Cask has been part of the Highland distillery's standard range since 2014. This is not a full maturation, but a finish. Unfortunately, there is no official information on how long the finish took. Searching the internet will give you some information, but the details seem to vary. The length of the aging process varies from 12 months to 18 months and even up to two years. The one most often mentioned is the one with a one-year finish, which sounds plausible. 

As you can read on the packaging and on the label of the bottle, the casks used are tawny port casks. Up to 50 years old port is said to have been used in these casks, according to the company's website. The whisky is bottled at 46% without chill-filtration and in its natural colour.

Appearance
Dark golden in colour with a light amber tinge.

Nose
The first nose is round, well-balanced and powerful at the same time. The finish of the port brings out the fruity aromas of strawberries, cranberries and morello cherries with a pleasant acidity. Soft toffee also provides a benevolent sweetness on the nose. This is followed by notes of green, crisp, ripe apples, vanilla and cake dough. The first maturation in bourbon casks could be responsible for this. The finish is accompanied by milk chocolate with an increased cocoa content. There is some freshness and a slight tingling on the nose, with the alcohol coming through from time to time. 

All in all, the nose is rather light and fruity, with sour berries and sweet flavours dominating. Classic port aromas of dried fruit, dark berries, leather, tobacco etc. are not present. But that's not always the case and I like that.

Taste
The mouthfeel is light and soft. The 46% ABV makes for a very pleasant to drink to start with. The sweetness, which is very dominant and comes mainly from the toffee, is a surprise. And now the port wine finish reveals itself in all its beauty. On the palate, the port flavours are much darker and more intense than on the nose. Now there are sultanas, dried dates and apricots, sweet creamy plum jam and ripe red grapes with a lovely residual sweetness. 

This is followed by a moderate pepperiness, accompanied by a not too strong spiciness from the casks. On the palate you can also find some old leather, dark chocolate and some dried tobacco leaves.

Finish
In the finish, the slightly bitter, tannic and simultaneously dry flavours of the oak come more and more to the fore. The fruit of the grape fades away. The intense sweetness of the aroma also fades away. The finish is of a medium length.

Conclusion
I was pleasantly surprised, as I didn't expect too much. I really like the combination of the initial fruity, tart aromas on the nose and that lovely sweetness with the fuller port flavours through to the not-too-dry finish. This is an uncomplicated, delicate, but very pleasant flavour profile that is a pleasure to drink.
