Whiskybase

Das Wetter ist herbstlich bis winterlich. Es ist kalt, regnerisch und stürmisch. Die richtige Zeit für schöne Sherrymalts. Und gleichzeitig habe ich tatsächlich bis dato noch keinen Dram von GlenAllachie im Glas. Da ist der 15y doch ein guter Einstieg wie ich meine und hoffe!
GlenAllachie, in der Speyside gelegen, wurde 1967 gegründet und war vor allem als Bestandteil von Blends bekannt. 2017 erwarb ein Konsortium um Billy Walker die Brennerei. Seit dem geht merkt man einen rasanten Anstieg der Abfüllungen. Neben einer umfangreichen Core Range gibt es eine Vielzahl an verschiedenen Serien mit unterschiedlichen Fassreifungen.

Beim 15jährigen kamen Oloroso und Pedro Ximénez Sherryfässer für die Reifung zum Einsatz, die genaue Mischung ist nicht bekannt. Ungefärbt, nicht kühlgefiltert kommt der Whisky mit 46% Alkohol in die Flasche. Die Stammdaten versprechen schon mal einiges. 

Nase & Aussehen
Das Auge isst bekanntlich mit und die Farbe des Malts verheißt mit seinem Mahagoni schon mal viel gutes. Sehr ölig und langsam bewegen sich die Tränen am Glasrand. Gleich vom Start weg eine ordentliche Portion an dunklen Fruchtaromen, angeführt von Pflaumenmus, reifen Blutorangen, säuerliches Weichselkompott und Sultaninen. Also eine schöne klassische Sherrynase. Die gerösteten Haselnüsse könnten vom Olorosofassanteil stammen. Eine deutliche Vanille ist ebenso zu riechen, wie süße dunkle Karamellzuckerln. Nach einiger Zeit gesellen sich Aromen von Muskat, Zimt und etwas Maggikrautgewürz zum Geruchspotpourri hinzu. Das Holz zeigt sich durch den Eindruck von dunkler Schokolade.

Geschmack
Mit einem öligen, fast schon buttrig weichem Mundgefühl beginnt der Malt zuerst mit dem süßen Pflaumenmus aus der Nase. Die Toffeebonbons sowie die Blutorange und die Vanille sind auch gleich am Start. Dann wird es leicht pfeffrig und wechselt deutlich in die würzige Seite. Muskat und Zimt dominieren nun. Der Alkohol ist zwar spritzig aber durchaus angenehm und bildet zusammen mit den würzigen Noten einen schönen Kontrapunkt zum süßen Einstieg.

Abgang
Nun kommt die Eiche voll in Fahrt. Aber absolut nicht bitter sondern aromatisch. Die Holzaromen zusammen mit etwas dunklem Kaffee bleiben sehr lange im Mund präsent. Gemeinsam mit abnehmenden Fruchtnoten klopft nun auch Leder an. Ein sehr angenehmes Finish!

Fazit
Ein echter Winter-Sherrymalt. In der Nase die deutlichen dunklen Fruchtkomponenten zusammen mit den eigentlich für Olorosofässern bekannten Schoko/Nussaromen. Im Geschmack und im Finish dann aber auch deutlich spritziger und würzig. Die Reifung von 15 Jahren im Eichenfass merkt man deutlich. Sehr aromatisch und für heute genau der richtige Malt. Der Whisky gefällt mir richtig gut. Bei aktuellen rund € 50,- bis € 55,- ist dies ein sehr gutes PLV.

The weather is autumnal to wintry. It's cold, rainy and stormy. The right time for nice sherry malts. And at the same time, I haven't had a dram of GlenAllachie in my glass yet. So the 15y is a good start, I think and hope!
GlenAllachie, located in Speyside, was founded in 1967 and was mainly known as a component of blends. In 2017, a consortium around Billy Walker acquired the distillery. Since then, there has been a rapid increase in bottlings. In addition to an extensive core range, there is a variety of different series with different cask maturations.

For the 15-year-old, Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks were used for maturation, the exact blend is not known. Uncoloured, not chill-filtered, the whisky comes into the bottle with 46% alcohol. The master data already promise a lot. 

Nose & Appearance
As we all know, the eye eats with us and the colour of the malt with its mahogany promises a lot of good things. Very oily and slowly the tears move along the edge of the glass. Right from the start a good portion of dark fruit flavours, led by plum jam, ripe blood oranges, sour sour cherry compote and sultanas. So a nice classic sherry nose. The toasted hazelnuts could come from the oloroso cask portion. A distinct vanilla can be smelled as well as sweet dark caramel sugars. After a while, aromas of nutmeg, cinnamon and some maggi spice join the olfactory potpourri. The wood reveals itself through the impression of dark chocolate.

Taste
With an oily, almost buttery soft mouthfeel, the malt starts first with the sweet plum jam from the nose. The toffee sweets as well as the blood orange and vanilla are also right at the start. Then it becomes slightly peppery and clearly switches to the spicy side. Nutmeg and cinnamon now dominate. The alcohol is tangy but quite pleasant and, together with the spicy notes, forms a nice counterpoint to the sweet entry.

Finish
Now the oak comes into full swing. But absolutely not bitter but aromatic. The wood flavours together with some dark coffee remain present in the mouth for a very long time. Together with diminishing fruit notes, leather now knocks on the door. A very pleasant finish!

Conclusion
A real winter sherry malt. In the nose the clear dark fruit components together with the chocolate/nut flavours actually known for oloroso casks. On the palate and in the finish, however, clearly tangier and spicy. The maturation of 15 years in oak casks is clearly noticeable. Very aromatic and just the right malt for today. I really like this whisky. At the current price of around € 50 to € 55, this is a very good PLV.
