Der Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Strength mit seinen mächtigen aber gleichzeitig so aromatischen 64,5%, sowie meine in diesem Sommer beginnende Zuneigung zu amerikanischen Ryes führten zum logischen Kauf des Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Rye mit 45%. Auch hier wird die klassische Single Barrel Flasche mit ihrem eher klassisch anmutenden Design verwendet. Ein bordeauxrotes Label, anstelle dem goldenen, verziert die Flasche. In der Bar sind diese beiden Flaschen nebeneinander ein wahrer Hingucker - Marketingopfer, ich weiß.

Die Rye Abfüllung kam 2017 als dritte Auskopplung der Single Barrel-Reihe auf den Markt. Und Rye als tragendender Grundstoff der Mashbill ist nicht wirklich oft gesehen bei der Brennerei aus Tennessee. A propos Mashbill, die verwendete Mischung setzt sich aus 70% Roggen, 18% Mais und 12% Gerste zusammen. Für die Reifung werden die klassichen ausgekohlten amerikanischen Weißeichenfässer verwendet, ebenso zum Einsatz kommt der berühmte Lincoln County Process zum Einsatz.

Nase
Eine sehr volle ausdrucksstarke Ryenase - gleich alles vorhanden, was sich ein Fan von Ryewhiskeys wünscht. Eine würzige Roggenbrotnote, die Frische von Eukalyptus und Minze und dies alles kombiniert mit viel Vanille und der weichen, typischen Nase von Jack Daniel’s. Der Lincoln County Process zeigt auch beim Rye seine volle Wirkung. Mit mehr Luft und Sauerstoff im Glas erscheinen rote Beeren, Kirschen, Muskatnuss, Gewürznelken - der Rye wird kräftiger, die Würzigkeit vom Roggen und des Eichenholzes der Fässer steigert sich. Alkohol ist sehr gut integriert. Die leichte Mentholnote, wie bei einer Zahnpasta mit Eukalyptusgeschmack, ist weniger dominant, als bei anderen Ryes. Die Nase ist gut austariert, der Roggen und die Vanille halten sich gut in Balance.

Geschmack
Sehr voll und angenehm im Mund. Der Roggenanteil ist sehr präsent. Starke Assoziation nach einem leckeren Minzbonbon, dass eine angenehme Frische erzeugt. Dazu aber auch eine deutlich erkennbare Süße sowie wieder viel Vanille. Kirschen mit Zimt und Muskatnuss werden mit einer aromatischen Eichenholznote begleitet. Beim zweiten Schluck hat sich der Gaumen an den Roggen gewöhnt, nun ist deutlich mehr Vanille und Kirsche im Vordergrund.

Abgang
Mit dem Vanille/Kirschkompott mit Zimt und Muskat geht es auch ins Finale. Die frische Mentholnote wird durch die Würzigkeit des Holzes vom Fass unterstützt und wechselt mit Fortdauer auf eine leicht bittere Seite. Begleitet von gerösteten, leicht gesalzenen Erdnüssen. Der Roggen mit seiner Würze und der frischen Eukalyptusnote bleiben länger im Mundraum präsent.

Fazit
Das ist ein sehr guter Rye! Die Ausgewogenheit zwischen ausreichend Roggenanteil mit all seinen Facetten zusammen mit dem vanilligen weichen Jack Daniel‘s Grundcharakter ist toll. Er ist sehr süffig und trotzdem nie eintönig. Die 45% sind stimmig und passen. Trotzdem, wenn es diesen Rye auch mit mehr Bumms gebe, der wäre eine Granate. Hm. es gibt tatsächlich in den USA eine Barrel Proof Abfüllung des Single Barrel Ryes. Aber dies ist eine Special Release und aktuell defacto nur in den USA zu bekommen, und auch dort nur sehr sporadisch. Liebe Jack Daniel's Verantwortlichen in Europa, könnten vielleicht ein paar Flaschen dieser begehrter Abfüllung den Weg nach Österreich finden? Ich opfere mich gerne...

The Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Strength with its powerful but at the same time so aromatic 64.5%, as well as my beginning passion for American Ryes this summer, led to the logical purchase of the Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Rye with 45%. Here, too, the classic single barrel bottle with its rather classic-looking design is used. A bordeaux red label decorates the bottle instead of the gold one. In the bar, these two bottles next to each other are a real eye-catcher - marketing victim, I know.

The rye expression was launched in 2017 as the third release in the single barrel series. And rye as the main ingredient of the Mashbill is not really often seen at the distillery from Tennessee. Speaking of Mashbill, the used mixture consists of 70% rye, 18% corn and 12% barley. The classic charred American white oak barrels are used for maturation, and the famous Lincoln County Process is also used.

Appearance

Nose
A very full, expressive rye nose - everything a fan of rye whiskeys could wish for. A spicy rye bread note, the freshness of eucalyptus and mint and all this combined with lots of vanilla and the soft, typical Jack Daniel's nose. The Lincoln County Process also shows its full effect in the rye. With more air and oxygen in the glass, red berries, cherries, nutmeg and cloves appear - the rye becomes stronger, the spiciness of the rye and the oak from the barrels increases. The alcohol is very well integrated. The slight menthol note, as with eucalyptus-flavoured toothpaste, is less dominant than with other ryes. The nose is well balanced, the rye and vanilla are well balanced.

Flavour
Very full and pleasant in the mouth. The rye flavour is very present. Strong association with a delicious mint sweet that creates a pleasant freshness. But also a clearly recognisable sweetness and again a lot of vanilla. Cherries with cinnamon and nutmeg are accompanied by an aromatic oak note. On the second sip, the palate has become familiar with the rye and now there is significantly more vanilla and cherry in the foreground.

Finish
The vanilla/cherry compote with cinnamon and nutmeg also leads into the finish. The fresh menthol note is supported by the spiciness of the wood from the cask and changes to a slightly bitter side as the flavour continues. Accompanied by roasted, lightly salted peanuts. The rye with its spiciness and the fresh eucalyptus note remain present in the mouth for longer.

Conclusion
This is a very good rye! The balance between sufficient rye flavour with all its facets together with the vanilla-like soft Jack Daniel's basic character is great. It is very quaffable and yet never boring. The 45% is harmonious and fitting. Nevertheless, if this rye were also available with more oomph, it would be a grenade. Hm. There is actually a barrel proof bottling of the single barrel rye in the USA. But this is a special release and is currently de facto only available in the USA, and even there only very sporadically. Dear Jack Daniel's managers in Europe, could perhaps a few bottles of this desirable bottling find their way to Austria? I would gladly sacrifice myself...
