Kilchoman befindet sich im Privatbesitz und ist die jüngste Brennerei auf Islay. Sie wurde 2005 gegründet, die erste Neugründung nach 124 Jahren. Die Distillery hat sich in den wenigen Jahren ihres Bestehens bereits einen tollen Ruf erarbeitet. Der Loch Gorm 2019 ist die erste Abfüllung, die ich im Glas habe.
Loch Gorm reift komplett in Oloroso Sherry Butts und wurde mit 46% abgefüllt. In diesem Batch von 2019 kamen Fässer aus 2006-2009 und 2011 zum Einsatz. Insgesamt wurden 15.000 Flaschen abgefüllt.
Nase & Aussehen
Heller Bernstein schimmert im Glas. Der Loch Gorm beginnt sogleich mit einer sehr kräftigen Rauchattacke. Holzkohlenfeuer mit Räucheraromen und in BBQ-Sauce eingelegtes Grillgut. Da fühlt man sich gleich an ein Barbecue im Freien versetzt. Im Rauch sind aber auch süße Noten deutlich zu riechen, die einen schönen Übergang zu den dunkelbeerigen Fruchtanteilen im Geruch bilden. Mit der Zeit verwandelt sich der Rauch, wird würziger, Kräuter und Wachholderblätter sind ins Feuer geworfen worden. Die Früchte wechseln von Beeren mehr in Richtung getrocknete Feigen, Datteln und Pflaumen. Mit ein paar Tropfen Wasser wird er süßer und sogar so etwas wie eine sanfte Vanille kommt hervor. Der Rauch bleibt aber weiterhin dominant.
Geschmack
Sogleich ein voluminöser Antritt mit sattem Rauch im Gepäck. Trotz des nur 46%igen Alkoholgehaltes gibt der kleine Rauchzwerg aber kräftig Gas im Mund. Viel aschiger Rauch gleich zu Beginn mit viel Kräutereinfluss im Geschmack. Leicht adstringierend. Die Süße sagt nach dem Antritt kurz Hallo und verschwindet dann wieder um den Küchenkräutern, wie Oregano und Majoran, Platz zu machen. Dazu eine schöne leichte Ingwerwürze. Die Frucht aus der Nase liegt dezent im Hintergrund.
Abgang
Die Asche vom Lagerfeuer ist noch lange zu genießen, zusammen mit den Kräutern, die im ausgehenden Feuer noch ihre Aromen abgeben. Liegt schön wärmend im Rachen. Zum Schluss kristallisiert sich noch eine herbe Tabaknote mit der Kombination aus dunklen getrockneten Beeren heraus.
Fazit
Der Loch Gorm 2019 geizt mal nicht mit seiner rauchigen Charakterseite. Da bekommt man ordentliche Rauchware geboten. Sehr schönes Teil. Die Rauch und Sherry Combo gefällt mir sehr gut. Ein Malt für nicht jeden Tag und nicht jeder Gelegenheit. Ein kleiner „Rauch“bold, der vor allem beim Geschmack kräftig zulangt.

In the few years of its existence, the distillery has already built up a great reputation. The Loch Gorm 2019 is the first bottling I have had of Kilchoman in my glass.
Loch Gorm is matured entirely in oloroso sherry butts and was bottled at 46%. Casks from 2006-2009 and 2011 were used in this batch of 2019. A total of 15,000 bottles were bottled.
Nose & Appearance
Light amber shimmers in the glass. The Loch Gorm starts immediately with a very powerful smoke attack. Charcoal fire with smoky aromas and barbecue marinated in BBQ sauce. It makes you feel like you're at an outdoor barbecue. However, sweet notes can also be clearly smelled in the smoke, which form a nice transition to the dark berry fruit components in the aroma. Over time, the smoke transforms, becomes spicier, herbs and juniper leaves have been thrown into the fire. The fruits change from berries more towards dried figs, dates and plums. With a few drops of water it becomes sweeter and even something like a gentle vanilla comes out. But the smoke remains dominant.

Taste
Immediately a voluminous attack with rich smoke in the luggage. Despite the only 46% alcohol content, the little smoke dwarf gives powerful gas in the mouth. Lots of ashy smoke right at the start with a lot of herbal influence in the taste. Slightly astringent. The sweetness says hello briefly after the start and then disappears again to make room for the kitchen herbs, such as oregano and marjoram. This is accompanied by a nice light ginger spiciness. The fruit from the nose is discreetly in the background.
Finish
The ash from the campfire can still be enjoyed for a long time, together with the herbs that still give off their aromas in the dying fire. Lays nicely warming in the throat. Finally, a tart tobacco note crystallises with the combination of dark dried berries.
Conclusion
The Loch Gorm 2019 is not stingy with its smoky character. You get some decent smokiness here. Very nice piece. I like the smoke and sherry combo very much. A malt for not every day and not every occasion. A small "smoke" bold, which is especially strong in the taste.
