Maker's Mark 101 Travelers Exclusive

Es gibt Tage, da muss es ein Bourbon sein. Heute ist so ein Tag. Die spontane Entscheidung fiel auf ein Sample vom Maker‘s Mark 101 Travelers Exclusive Abfüllung. Von Maker's Mark aus Kentucky habe ich bereits den Maker’s Mark Bourbon Whisky und den Makers 46 verkostet. Vor allem der letztgenannte gefiel mir damals recht gut. Mal sehen wie sich die 101er Version mit deutlich mehr Alkoholgehalt mit 50,5% (101 Proof) schlägt.

Nase & Aussehen
Die Farbe im Glas ist ein dunkles, sattes Kupfer. Der erste Eindruck ist eine intensive klassische Bourbonnase. Viel Mais, Karamell und Vanille strömen hier aus dem Glas. Jedoch wenig bis gar kein Duft nach Klebstoff, wie man oft bei Bourbon assoziiert. Der hohe Maisanteil in der Mashbill zeigt sich eben zu Beginn dominant. Dies ändert sich nach kurzer Zeit und wechselt zu schönen saftigen Orangenaromen. Diese waren für mich auch beim Makers 46 deutlich vorhanden. Zusätzlich schwingen vorweihnachtliche Gewürze wie Muskat, Zimt und Gewürznelken mit und präsentieren damit die aromatischen Eindrücke vom Holz. Schön ausgewogen und nicht zu kräftig, wie es oft bei höher prozentigen Bourbons passiert. Alkohol zeigt sich ganz leicht durch eine dezente frische After Eight Minzenote,  ist jedoch gut eingebunden.

Geschmack
Ein schöner kräftiger Antritt im Mund, dabei jedoch ölig und süffig. Zuerst viel Karamell und Vanille sowie die saftige Orange aus der Nase dominant. Relativ rasch wechselt der Geschmack in Richtung Würzigkeit vom Holz mit dem Mais in Kombination und dem Muskat und Zimt. Der Alkohol bleibt zum Abgang hin mit der Minznote präsent.

Abgang
Leicht adstringierend im Finish, die 50,5% zeigen ihre Kraft. Gegen Ende hin bekommen die Holzaromen einen blumigen Touch. Das Finale ist mittellang, die Holznoten, gepaart mit den Gewürzen bleiben noch länger im Mund präsent.

Fazit
Sehr süffig und eine schöne Kombination aus Orange, Karamell und kräftigen Gewürznuancen. Der erhöhte Alkoholgehalt gefällt mir Im Vergleich zum herkömmlichen Maker’s Mark kommen deutlich mehr Aromen beim Geruch und im Geschmack an. Ist er besser als der Makers 46? Hm. Nein. Würde ich nicht sagen. Würde ich ihn mir zulegen? Ja.

There are days when it has to be a bourbon. Today is one of those days. The spontaneous decision fell on a sample from the Maker's Mark 101 Travelers Exclusive bottling. I have already tasted the Maker's Mark Bourbon Whisky and the Makers 46 from this Kentucky distillery. I particularly liked the latter at the time. Let's see how the 101 version with significantly more alcohol content at 50.5% (101 proof) does.

Nose & Appearance
The colour in the glass is a dark, rich copper. The first impression is an intense classic bourbon nose. Lots of corn, caramel and vanilla pouring out of the glass here. However, little to no scent of glue, as is often associated with bourbon. The high corn content in the mashbill is dominant at the beginning. This changes after a short time and switches to nice juicy orange aromas. For me, these were also clearly present in the Makers 46. In addition, pre-Christmas spices like nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves resonate and present the aromatic impressions of the wood. Nicely balanced and not too strong, as often happens with higher-percentage bourbons. Alcohol shows up very slightly with a subtle fresh after eight mint note, but is well integrated.

Taste
A nice strong attack in the mouth, yet oily and drinkable. At first a lot of caramel and vanilla as well as the juicy orange from the nose dominate. Relatively quickly the taste changes towards spiciness from the wood with the corn in combination and the nutmeg and cinnamon. The alcohol remains present towards the finish with the mint note.

Finish
Slightly astringent on the finish, the 50.5% shows its power. Towards the end, the wood flavours take on a floral touch. The finish is medium long, the wood notes paired with the spices remain present in the mouth for longer.

Conclusion
Very drinkable and a nice combination of orange, caramel and strong spice nuances. I like the increased alcohol content Compared to the conventional Maker's Mark, there are clearly more aromas in the smell and taste. Is it better than the Makers 46? Hm. No. I wouldn't say so. Would I buy it? Yes.
