Mac-Talla ist neben Càrn Mòr und Old Perth die bislang letzte Abfüllungserie von Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers, die bis 2020 unter Morrison & Mackay firmierten, und 2021 auf den Markt kam. Die Morrisons gehören zu den ältesten Whisky-Familien in Schottland. So waren sie bis 1994 Eigentümer der Bowmore Brennerei auf Islay. 

Mit Mac-Talla kehrten sie whiskyseitig wieder auf Islay zurück, denn alle Abfüllungen dieser Reihe basieren auf nicht geannte Islay Single Malts, die in unterschiedlichen Fass-Versionen teilweise als NAS oder als Age Statement reifen.

Der Mac-Talla Red Wine Barriques kam 2022 auf den Markt und war die erste limitierte Abfüllung der Serie. Der Single Malt in den 7.200 Flaschen reifte in Rotwein Barrique Fässern aus der französischen Bordeaux-Region und besitzt keine Altersangabe, aber dafür eine Alkoholstärke von 53,8%.

Nase
Da hat die Nase aber etwas zu tun. Oh ja! Intensive Rauchschwaden eines Holzfeuers, ein wenig Asche ist auch schon dabei. Der Rauch ist warm und würzig zugleich. Über dem Feuer brutzelt etwas geräucherter Speck. Sehr delikat und harmonisch. Vom Alkohol ist wenig zu spüren. Wenn die ersten intensiven Rauchwolken verfliegen kommen sehr schöne Beerenaromen zum Vorschein - vor allem reife Brombeeren und Heidelbeeren. Aber auch ein paar Erdbeeren und Kirschen mit Pflaumenmus ergänzen das Fruchtpotpourri. Eine Handvoll getrockneter Küchenkräuter und auch Spuren von salzigem Seetang komplettieren den Geruch. Das ganze ist nicht sehr komplex aber es duftet sehr nice! 

Geschmack
Viel süßer Rauch, sehr viel Rauch, hm lecker. Schönes warmes und weiches Mundgefühl. Zusammen mit dem Holzfeuerrauch ist auch etwas Asche vorhanden. Die Beeren aus der Nase sind nun zu einem süßen Beerenröster mit Vanille mutiert. Wie auch der geräucherte Speck sich in ein rosa Steak mit ordentlich Rub mit vielen Gewürzen gewandelt hat - richtig viel Umami. Apropos Gewürze, diese sind weiterhin getrocknet, jedoch haben sie Unterstützung von etwas schwarzen Pfeffer erhalten. Mit Fortdauer wird der Rauch, der die gesamte Zeit im Mund präsent ist, trockener.

Abgang
Der Rauch bekommt zum Ende hin immer mehr Unterstützung durch Asche - die Holzscheite im Feuer brennen immer weiter herunter und werden zu Asche. Ein paar Zweige der Kräuter schwelen in der Glut. Man findet auch dunkle Schokolade mit höherem Kakaoanteil und es wird im Finish im Mundraum, dass dank des Rauches ziemlich lange verweilt, immer trockener.

Fazit
Der gefällt mir! Ich traue mir keine Vermutung abzugeben, welche Brennerei sich hier verbirgt. Es ist grundsätzlich auch egal. Der Whisky funktioniert mit der Reifung in den Rotwein Barrique Fässern sehr gut. Der Holzrauch ist intensiv, ja, aber diese dunklen Beeren in Kombination passen perfekt. Eine Flasche von dem mit ein paar Freunden am Abend beim offenen Lagerfeuer genießen und die Flasche überlebt den Abend nicht.

Alongside Càrn Mòr and Old Perth, Mac-Talla is the latest bottling series from Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers, which until 2020 was known as Morrison & Mackay, to be launched in 2021. The Morrisons are one of Scotland's oldest whisky families. They owned the Bowmore distillery on Islay until 1994. 

Mac-Talla marks their return to Islay, as all the bottlings in the series are based on Islay single malts, matured in a variety of casks as NAS or age-statement.

Mac-Talla Red Wine Barriques was released in 2022 and was the first limited release in the series. Matured in red wine casks from the Bordeaux region of France, the 7,200-bottle single malt has no age statement but is 53.8% ABV.

Nose
The nose has something to do. Oh yes! Intense clouds of smoke from a wood fire, and a little bit of ash is present as well. The smoke is warm and aromatic at the same time. Some smoked bacon sizzles over the fire. Very delicate and harmonious. There are few notes of alcohol. As the first intense clouds of smoke dissipate, beautiful berry flavours come to the fore - especially ripe blackberries and blueberries. A few strawberries and cherries with plum jam complete the fruit potpourri. A handful of dried herbs and a hint of salty seaweed complete the flavour. The whole thing is not very complex, but it smells very good! 

Palate
Lots of sweet smoke, lots of smoke, hmm delicious. Nice warm and soft mouthfeel. There is some ash along with the wood smoke. The berries from the nose have now mutated into a sweet berry roast with vanilla. Just as the smoked bacon has turned into a medium rare steak with a good rub and lots of spice - lots of umami. Talking of spices, these are still dried, but are backed up by a little black pepper. The smoke, which is present in the mouth all the way through, gets drier as the flavour progresses.

Finish
Towards the end, the smoke is increasingly supported by ash - the logs in the fire continue to burn down and turn to ash. A few sprigs of herbs are smoldering in the embers. There is also dark chocolate with a higher cocoa percentage, and the finish becomes drier and drier in the mouth, which lingers for quite a long time thanks to the smoke.

Conclusion
I like this one! I'm not going to try and guess which distillery is hidden here. It doesn't really matter. The whisky works very well in red wine casks. The wood smoke is intense, yes, but the combination of dark berries is perfect. Enjoy a bottle of this with a few friends around an open fire in the evening and the bottle won't last the night.
