Über die im Südburgenland in Österreich gelegene Old Raven Brennerei habe ich an anderer Stelle bereits mehr geschrieben. Die beiden bisherigen Abfüllungen, die ich bisher im Glas hatte waren beide sehr gut und von einem schottischen Destillat nicht zu unterscheiden.
Der Lockdown ist mit 10 Jahren die bisher älteste Standardabfüllung der Brennerei und wurde - wie es am Label steht - im "f**cking Lockdown 2021" mit 41,8 % Alkoholgehalt abgefüllt. Verwendet wurden für die Reifung sowohl First-Fill PX-Sherryfässer sowie Ex-Bourbon-Casks.
Aussehen
Helles Rostbraun. Viele Legs suchen sich relativ zügig den Weg am Glasrand hinab. Der Whisky zeigt eine mittlere Viskosität im Glas.
Nase
Campbeltown ähnlich mit etwas „dreckigen“ leicht rauchigen Anklängen gleich zu Beginn. Das Sherryfass zeigt sich mit appetitlichen Nuss-Nugart und Brombeermarmelade Noten sowie auch mit leicht süßlichem Karamell. Nach ein paar Minuten im Glas und Sauerstoffzufuhr kommen auch Leder- und Tabakaromen zum Vorschein. Etwas Frisches wie Menthol oder Minze blitzt immer wieder dezent auf, nicht unangenehm in Verbindung mit der Nuss-Nugart Schokolade. Unterschwellig die ganze Zeit präsent sind getrocknete Wald- und Küchenkräuter wie Oregano, Thymian und Majoran. Vom verwendeten Bourbonfass bekomme ich eher weniger zu fassen. Wenn dann eine feine und zarte hellfruchtige, fast schon Weintrauben ähnliche, Nuance die am Rand dahin schwebt und die Kräuternoten schön unterstützt.
Geschmack
Der Malt beginnt mit einem sehr cremigen, fast schon buttrigen Mundgefühl. Eine feine Süße ist da. Die bereits in der Nase erkannte Ähnlichkeit zu der typischen leicht schmutzigen Campbeltownnote ist im Geschmack fast noch deutlicher wahrzunehmen. Rauchig aber nicht stark, fast schon so etwas muffig, alt. Könnte dies der Brennereicharakter oder vom Holz der Fässer stammen? Dann übernimmt rasch die Nussschokolade sowie die Kräuter. Auch das alte Leder und der feuchte Tabak aus der Nase ist zugegen. Von der Brombeerenmarmelade ist jetzt im Geschmack eher weniger zu merken. Insgesamt sehr harmonisch und ausbalanciert zwischen der Süße und den herben würzigen Bestandteilen komponiert.
Abgang
Das Finish ist zumindest mittellang. Wenig bis fast keine Bitterstoffe aus den Fässern erkennbar. Die Tabakaromen und die Muffigkeit sind nun dominant und bleiben am Längsten spürbar im Mund haften.
Fazit
Die dritte Abfüllung von Old Raven in meinem Glas, die erste nicht fassstark. Und auch diese weiß zu gefallen. Die knapp 42% reichen meiner Meinung nach völlig aus. Auch im Geschmack kommen die Aromen gut zur Geltung. Für mich dominiert hier das PX-Sherryfass über dem Ex-Bourbon Cask ohne aber zu überpowern. Rund und ausgewogen, wenn auch mehr auf der würzigen und nussigen Seite. Lecker und sehr süffig. Auch ohne geselliger Runde kann hier eine Flasche im nächsten Lockdown rasch leer werden.

I have already written more about the Old Raven distillery in southern Burgenland, Austria. The two bottlings that I have had in my glass so far were both very good and indistinguishable from a Scottish distillate.
The Lockdown is with 10 years the oldest standard bottling of the distillery so far and was bottled - as it says on the label - in the "f**cking Lockdown 2021" with 41.8 % alcohol content. Both first-fill PX sherry casks and ex-bourbon casks were used for the maturation.
Appearance
Light rusty brown. Many legs find their way down the rim of the glass relatively quickly. The whisky shows a medium viscosity in the glass.
Nose
Campbeltown-like with some "dirty" slightly smoky hints right at the start. The sherry cask shows up with appetising nutty nugart and blackberry jam notes as well as slightly sweet caramel. After a few minutes in the glass and oxygenation, leather and tobacco aromas also emerge. Something fresh like menthol or mint flashes up discreetly again and again, not unpleasantly in connection with the nut-nugart chocolate. Dried forest and kitchen herbs like oregano, thyme and marjoram are present all the time. I get rather less of the bourbon barrel used. When it does, a fine and delicate light fruity, almost grape-like nuance floats along the edge and supports the herbal notes nicely.

Taste
The malt starts with a very creamy, almost buttery mouthfeel. A subtle sweetness is there. The similarity to the typical slightly dirty Campbeltown note already recognised in the nose is almost more noticeable in the taste. Smoky but not strong, almost a bit musty, old. Could this be the distillery character or from the wood of the casks? Then the nut chocolate quickly takes over as well as the herbs. The old leather and damp tobacco from the nose is also present. There is less of the blackberry jam on the palate. Overall very harmonious and balanced between the sweetness and the tart spicy components.
Finish
The finish is at least medium long. Little to almost no bitterness from the casks detectable. The tobacco flavours and mustiness are now dominant and linger the longest noticeably in the mouth.
Conclusion
The third bottling of Old Raven in my glass, the first not cask strength. And this one also knows how to please. The just under 42% is quite enough in my opinion. The flavours also come through well in the taste. For me, the PX sherry cask dominates over the ex-bourbon cask without overpowering. Round and balanced, although more on the spicy and nutty side. Tasty and very drinkable. Even without a social gathering, a bottle can be quickly emptied in the next lockdown.
