Der Sea Shepherd Sherry ist bereits die dritte Abfüllung der Zusammenarbeit der Meeresschutzorganistation Sea Shepherd und dem deutschen Spirituosenimporteur Kirsch. Wie schon bei den Vorgängerflaschen geht ein Teil des Verkaufserlöses an die internationale, gemeinnützige Organisation, die sich dem Schutz der Artenvielfalt und der marinen Ökosysteme verschrieben hat.
Aber was ist hier nun in der Flasche? Was man weiß ist, es handelt sich um einen NAS (No Age Statement), der Malt kommt von Islay und erfuhr ein Finish von 12 Monate in einem Sherry Hogshead. Erfreulicherweise wurde kein Farbstoff und keine Kühlfiltration eingesetzt und der Whisky wurde mit 45,8% Alkohol abgefüllt.
Nase & Aussehen
Die Farbe im Glas ist Bernstein, der Malt liegt mit einem sehr öligen Film am Glasrand, nur wenige Legs bewegen sich hinab. Gleich intensiven, speckigen Islay Rauch in der Nase. Ein Lagerfeuer am Meeresstrand, dass fast schon zur Gänze heruntergebrannt ist. Weiße Holzkohlenstücke auf denen noch das Fett vom gegrillten Steak leicht bruzelt, die noch stark rauchen und wo sich der Geruch nach Salz und Meeresgischt miteinander vermischt. Auf dem Feuer steht nun ein Topf mit einem fruchtigsäuerlichen Waldbeerenkompott mit Rosmarin und Orangenzesten. Gesüßt mit Waldhonig und etwas Ingwer. Auch eine Vanillecreme ist beim Dessert mit von der Partie. Mit etwas Zeit im Glas gesellen sich Aromen von Nadelhölzern hinzu, leicht harzig und der Duft von frisch abgeschnittenen Tannennadeln.
Geschmack
Der Malt beginnt mit einem sehr cremigen, an die Vanillesauce aus der Nase erinnerndes Mundgefühl. Angenehm süß und fruchtig, das Beerenkompott ist da. Aber dann wird es sehr schnell kräftig. Der Holzrauch kombiniert sehr gut mit einer geräucherten, würzigen Note, die auch etwas Pfeffer mit sich führt. Rosmarin und die Orangenschalen sind auch im Geschmack spürbar. Der Alkohol ist gut eingebunden. Keine Fehlaromen bemerkbar. Kräftig aber trotzdem rund und harmonisch.
Abgang
Gegen Ende hin kommt etwas das Eichenholz der Fässer zum Vorschein, ohne jedoch bitter zu werden. Die Fruchtaromen sind eher kurz bis mittellang. Der speckige Islay Rauch bleibt ebenso lange präsent, wie die Aromen der harzigen Tannennadeln.
Fazit
Ich bin positiv überrascht. Meine Erwartungen an diese NAS Abfüllung mit karitativem Sidekick waren konservativ dezent. Umso mehr gefällt mir, was ich im Glas hatte. Ordentliche Rauch- und Sherrykombination. Außer dem 12 monatlichen Finish im Sherry Hogshead habe ich keine weiteren Infos bezüglich Alter des Malts. Aber dies ist sekundär. Primär ist, der Whisky schmeckt. Wer einen leckeren Islay mit Sherryeinfluss will und dabei auch etwas Gutes tun will, kann hier zugreifen.

The Sea Shepherd Sherry is the third bottling of the collaboration between the marine conservation organisation Sea Shepherd and the German spirits producer Kirsch. As with the previous bottles, a portion of the sales proceeds goes to the international, non-profit organisation, which is dedicated to the protection of biodiversity and marine ecosystems.
But what is in the bottle? What is known is that it is an NAS, the malt comes from Islay and was finished for 12 months in a sherry hogshead. Fortunately, no colouring or chill filtration was used and the whisky was bottled at 45.8% alcohol.
Nose & appearance
The colour in the glass is amber, the malt lies with a very oily film on the rim of the glass, only a few legs move down. Immediately intense, bacony Islay smoke on the nose. A campfire on the seashore that has almost burnt down completely. White pieces of charcoal on which the fat from the grilled steak is still roasting lightly, which are still smoking strongly and where the smell of salt and sea spray mix together. On the fire there is now a pot with a fruity-sour forest berry compote with rosemary and orange zest. Sweetened with forest honey and a little ginger. A vanilla cream is also part of the dessert. With a little time in the glass, aromas of coniferous woods join in, slightly resinous and the scent of freshly cut pine needles.

Taste
The malt starts with a very creamy mouthfeel reminiscent of the custard from the nose. Pleasantly sweet and fruity, the berry compote is there. But then it gets strong very quickly. The wood smoke combines very well with a smoked, spicy note that also carries some pepper. Rosemary and the orange peel are also noticeable in the taste. The alcohol is well integrated. No off-flavours noticeable. Strong but still round and harmonious.
Finish
Towards the end, the oak from the barrels comes out a little, but without becoming bitter. The fruit flavours are rather short to medium in length. The bacony Islay smoke remains present for a long time, as do the flavours of the resinous pine needles.
Conclusion
I am positively surprised. My expectations of this NAS bottling with a charitable sidekick were conservatively modest. All the more I like what I had in the glass. Decent smoke and sherry combination. Apart from the 12 month finish in the sherry hogshead, I have no further info regarding the age of the malt. But this is secondary. The primary thing is that the whisky tastes good. If you want a tasty Islay with a sherry influence and also want to do something good, you can get it here.
