Brabazon 01 ist der Auftakt einer limitierten Abfüllungsserie von Teeling. Die Reihe wurde nach William Brabazon, dem 11. Earl of Meath benannt, einer sehr gewichtigen Rolle im Irland des 16. Jahrhunderts. Das Alter des Whiskeys ist nicht bekannt, wir wissen dass er 2017 mit 49,5% abgefüllt wurde und in Sherry Fässern reifte.
Aussehen
Auf der Flasche finde ich nur die Infos, dass das Destillat nicht kühlgefiltert ist. Von einer Färbung steht weder auf der Flasche noch auf der Tube etwas. Normalerweise, wenn es ungefärbt wäre, würde es wahrscheinlich irgendwo stehen. Auch im Internet konnte ich hier keine klare Information finden - die Whiskybase meint ungefärbt. Falls dem so ist, dann ist die Farbe ein satter Bernsteinton.
Nase
Zuerst mal ohne Verwendung von Wasser bekomme ich vom Start weg gleich einen ordentlichen Alkoholstich. Die fast 50% Alkohol kommen mit einer jugendlichen Wildheit daher. Hinter der Schärfe verbirgt sich vor ab etwas metallisches. Obs am Alkohol oder der Jugend liegt, keine Ahnung. Der Teeling ist ein NAS und ich fürchte, er ist wirklich ziemlich jung. Erst nach gut 10 bis 15 Minuten im Glas entfalten sich langsam Aromen im Glas, die auf einen Sherryeinfluss hindeuten könnten. Leichter Anflug von Trockenfrüchten. Mit Wasser kommen die Trockenfrüchte noch ein wenig besser zur Geltung und eine leichte süßliche Malzigkeit ist zu erkennen.
Geschmack
Im Mund ist er überraschend mild und cremig. Eine angenehme Süße verbunden mit einer netten Würzigkeit. Der Geschmack ist deutlich besser als die Nase ohne Wasser. Mit Wasser wird der Geschmack weicher und süßer und allgemein runder.
Abgang
Der Abgang ist eher leicht. Wenig Bitterkeit und ebenso wenig Eiche. Mit Wasser wird der Abgang etwas anhaltender und die Eiche kommt besser hervor.
Fazit
Ich habe mir die Serie 01 und 02 von der Brabazon Abfüllung nach einem Besuch von Teeling in Dublin in einem Anflug von Nostalgie gekauft. Leider kann mich die Nase nicht begeistern. Der Alkohol ist sehr deutlich in der Nase. Der Malt benötigt viel Geduld, dann kommen einige Aromen gegen den stechenden Alkohl an. Der Geschmack ist dafür eine angenehme Überraschung. Der Abgang dafür wieder reduziert.

Brabazon 01 is the start of a limited bottling series by Teeling. The series is named after William Brabazon, the 11th Earl of Meath, a very important figure in 16th century Ireland. The age of the whiskey is not known, we know that it was bottled in 2017 at 49.5% and matured in sherry casks.
Appearance
On the bottle I only find the information that the distillate is not chill-filtered. There is no mention of colouring on the bottle or the tube. Normally, if it were uncoloured, it would probably say so somewhere. I couldn't find any clear information about this on the internet either - Whiskybase says uncoloured. If so, the colour is a rich amber shade.
Nose
First of all, without the use of water, I get a decent alcohol kick right from the start. The almost 50% alcohol comes with a youthful ferocity. Behind the spiciness, there is something metallic. I don't know if it's the alcohol or the youth. The Teeling is an NAS and I'm afraid it's really quite young. Only after a good 10 to 15 minutes in the glass do aromas slowly unfold in the glass that could indicate a sherry influence. Slight hint of dried fruit. With water, the dried fruits come to the fore a little better and a slight sweet maltiness can be detected.

Taste
In the mouth, it is surprisingly mild and creamy. A pleasant sweetness combined with a nice spiciness. The taste is clearly better than the nose without water. With water, the taste becomes softer and sweeter and generally rounder.
Finish
The finish is rather light. Little bitterness and equally little oak. With water the finish becomes a little more persistent and the oak comes out better.
Conclusion
I bought the 01 and 02 series from the Brabazon bottling after a visit to Teeling in Dublin in a fit of nostalgia. Unfortunately, the nose fails to excite me. The alcohol is very evident on the nose. The malt needs a lot of patience, then some aromas come up against the pungent alcohol. The taste is a pleasant surprise. The finish is reduced again.
