Whiskybase

Der Kilkerran 16 Jahre, von dem ich mir ein Sample besorgen konnte, wurde 2020 erstmals abgefüllt und ist streng limitiert (genaue Flaschenanzahl ist nicht bekannt). Für die Reifung wurden hauptsächlich Ex-Bourbonfässer verwendet und ein kleiner Anteil bestand aus Marsala Fässern. Abgefüllt wurde ungefärbt und ohne Kühlfiltration mit optimalen 46% Trinkstärke.

Ausehen
Die Farbe ist hellgold.

Nase
Hier haben wir zu Beginn einen Schmeichler in der Nase. Die Aromen sind durchaus präsent, aber kein Geruch hebt sich deutlich hervor, alle Geruchskomponenten sind harmonisch miteinander zu einer wirklich starken Nase verwoben. Eine eigene Staubigkeit, Mineralität ist allgegenwärtig. Dazu eine deutliche Vanillenote und ein mit Honig gesüßtes Zitronen/Ananassorbet mit reifen gelben Birnen und Weinbergpfirsichen. Rauch nehme ich zwar nicht wahr, jedoch die für mich immer mit Whiskys aus Campbeltown eigene maschinenölige leichte „Dreckigkeit“, die ich sehr gerne habe. Ebenfalls vorhanden sind Eindrücke vom Holz der Fässer, die sich im Hintergrund halten und das Geruchsspektrum schön abrunden.

Geschmack
Dickflüssig, fast schon sirupartig gleitet der Malt in den Mund. Tolles Mundgefühl, dass sofort nach einem weiteren Schluck verlangt. Sehr süß beginnt es, zusammen mit einer Fruchtkombination aus Zitrone, Ananas und nun - im Gegensatz zur Nase - rotem Kernobst. Weiterhin eine schöne kräftige Vanille, direkt aus der Schote. Danach folgt eine leicht würzige, geriebenem Ingwer ähnliche Note. Keine Schärfe in dem Sinn, sehr aromatisch. Danach wieder die typische Spur von Maschinenöl und etwas Rauch. Könnte auch vom Holz her stammen.

Abgang
Mit dieser Holz-, Rauch- und Öl-Kombination geht es auch in Richtung Finish. Der mittel- bis langanhaltende Abgang wird noch durch Zitronenschale und einer leichten Honigsüße komplettiert.

Fazit
Der Whisky gefällt. Leider. Leider für mein Portmonee gefällt mir der Campbeltown Style wirklich gut. Der 16y ist nochmals eine Steigerung des schon leckeren Kilkerran 12y. Die fast komplette Reifung in Bourbonfässern passt ideal zum New Make von Glengyle. Neben den Maschinenölaromen wissen die schönen Fruchtaromen und die Süße wirklich zu überzeugen. Absoluter Kaufkandidat für mich, wenn ich noch irgendwo eine halbwegs bezahlbare Flasche bekomme.

The Kilkerran 16y, of which I was able to get a sample, was first bottled in 2020 and is strictly limited (exact number of bottles is not known). For the maturation mainly ex-bourbon casks were used and a small part consisted of Marsala casks. It was bottled uncoloured and without chill filtration at an optimal 46% drinking strength.

Appearance
The colour is light gold.

Nose
Here we have a flatterer on the nose to begin with. The aromas are definitely present, but no one smell stands out clearly, all the olfactory components are harmoniously woven together to create a really strong nose. A dustiness of its own, minerality is omnipresent. There is also a distinct vanilla note and a honey-sweetened lemon/pineapple sorbet with ripe yellow pears and vineyard peaches. I don't detect any smoke, but I do detect the machine-oily slight "dirtiness" that I always associate with Campbeltown whiskies, which I like very much. Also present are impressions of the wood of the casks, which remain in the background and round off the olfactory spectrum nicely.

Taste
Viscous, almost syrupy, the malt glides into the mouth. Great mouthfeel that immediately calls for another sip. It starts very sweet, together with a fruit combination of lemon, pineapple and now - in contrast to the nose - red stone fruit. Further, a nice strong vanilla, straight from the pod. This is followed by a slightly spicy, grated ginger-like note. No spiciness in that sense, very aromatic. Then again the typical trace of machine oil and some smoke. Could also come from the wood.

Finish
With this wood, smoke and oil combination, it also goes towards the finish. The medium to long finish is completed by lemon zest and a slight honey sweetness.

Conclusion
The whisky pleases. Unfortunately. Unfortunately for my wallet, I really like the Campbeltown style. The 16y is once again a step up from the already delicious Kilkerran 12y. The almost complete maturation in bourbon casks fits perfectly with Glengyle's New Make. Besides the machine oil aromas, the beautiful fruit flavours and the sweetness are really convincing. Absolute purchase candidate for me, if I can still get a halfway affordable bottle somewhere.
