Bowmore ist schon lange sehr aktiv am Travel Retail Markt unterwegs. Bereits 2017 brachte die Islay-Brennerei mit dem 18jährigen Deep & Complex für den Retail Bereich eine neue volljährige Abfüllung heraus, die sich durch eine Komplett-Reifung in Ex-Oloroso- und PX-Sherry-Fässern von der gleichaltrigen Standard-Abfüllung unterscheidet. Der Alkoholgehalt von 43%, eine zusätzliche Färbung und Kältefiltration nennen beide Vertreter ihr Eigen.

Die Core-Range-Flasche hat mir gar nicht schlecht gemundet, mal sehen ob die Travel Retail Abfüllung ähnlich positiv abschneidet. 

Aussehen
Dunkles Mahagoni, mit Farbstoff nachgebessert.

Nase
Der Einfluss der PX-Sherryfässer offenbart sich sofort nach dem Einschenken. Rosinen und eingekochtes Pflaumenmus sorgen für die erste süß fruchtige Impression. Getrocknete Datteln und Feigen, Muskatnuss sowie Gewürznelken komplettieren zusammen mit Tabakblätter und Leder die Sherryeinflüsse im Geruch. Dezenter Rauch, der etwas schmutzig aschiges und zugleich auch mineralisches in das Geruchsgefüge einfügt, untermalt im Hintergrund die anderen Aromen. Die Kombination dieses leicht dreckig, aschigen Rauchs mit den Fruchtnoten ist sehr gefällig und bietet ein rundes, harmonisches Gesamtbild, dass schon eine gewisse Tiefe suggeriert. Komplexität ist jedoch nur wenig vorhanden, ist aber auch nicht störend. Der Alkohol ist überhaupt nicht präsent.

Geschmack
Erste Überraschung. Die 43% funktionieren wider Erwarten recht gut, das Mundgefühl ist nicht zu wässrig. Die Aromen sind ausgeprägt und dicht. Zuerst zeigt dich süßes Karamell, dem Pflaumenmus, Rosinen und Erdbeermarmelade dicht folgen.

Zweite Überraschung. Es wird deutlich würziger und herber, als die Nase vermuten ließ. Vor allem die Raucharomen geben den Ton an. Angebranntes Holz und Asche, ziemlich viel Asche sogar, angekohlte italienische Küchenkräuter, BBQ-Speck geräuchert am Rost des Kohlengrillers liegend. Dazu eine angenehme Würzigkeit vom Holz.

So gefällig und abgerundet die Nase ist, so dunkel und rauchig ist der Whisky im Geschmack. Hier passt der Zusatz „Deep & Complex“ schon eher.

Abgang
Dunkle Schokolade mit einem kleinen Espresso, eine leichte Trockenheit vorne am Zahnfleisch, immer noch reichlich Asche von Zigarren, getrocknete Tabakblätter. Der Rauch umkleidet klebrig den Gaumen und Rachen. Das Finish gestaltet sich recht lange.

Fazit
In der Nase kommt mir der Bowmore noch glattgebügelt, etwas konstruiert vor. Man hat das Gefühl die Aromen würden nur mit angezogener Handbremse unterwegs sein. Es dominieren im Geruch eindeutig die Sherryfässer das Geschehen. Der Rauch spielt die zweite Geige. Ganz anders ist es im Mund. Nach einem kurzen Aufblitzen der süß fruchtigen PX-Noten wird es deutlich würziger und der Rauch hebt ab und präsentiert seine aschige und speckige Seite. Das gefällt mir muss ich sagen. Auch die 43% stehen ihm gut zu Gesicht. Im Vergleich zum normalen 18y ist dieser deutlich sherry-betonter und rauer.

Bowmore has been very active in the travel retail market for a long time now. Back in 2017, the Islay distillery released the 18-year-old Deep & Complex, a new full-aged retail bottling that differs from the standard bottling of the same age by maturing entirely in ex-Oloroso and PX sherry casks. Both are at 43% abv, with additional colouring and chill filtration. The core range bottle didn't taste too bad to me, so let's see if the travel retail bottling does as well.

Appearance
Dark mahogany, coloured.

Nose
Immediately after pouring, the influence of the PX sherry casks is evident. The first impression is sweet and fruity, with sultanas and cooked plum jam. Dried dates and figs, nutmeg and cloves, tobacco leaves and leather complete the sherry influences on the nose. Subtle smoke, which adds something dirty, ashy and mineral to the olfactory structure, is supporting the other flavours in the background. The combination of this slightly dirty, ashy smoke with the fruity flavours is very pleasing and offers a rounded, harmonious overall picture that suggests some depth. There is little complexity, but it is not disturbing. The alcohol is completely absent.

Palate
The first surprise. Contrary to expectations, the 43% works quite well, the mouthfeel is not too watery. The aromas are pronounced and dense. The first flavour is sweet caramel, followed closely by plum jam, sultanas and strawberry jam. 

The second surprise. The aromas become much spicier and more bitter than the nose suggested. The smoky flavours are the most prominent. Burnt wood and ash, a lot of ash, charred Italian herbs, bacon smoked on the charcoal grill. Plus a pleasant spiciness from the wood. As pleasant and rounded as the nose is, the palate is dark and smoky. The addition 'deep and complex' is more appropriate here.

Finish
Dark chocolate with a hint of espresso, slightly dry at the front of the gums, still plenty of cigar ash, dried tobacco leaves. The smoke coats the palate and throat thickly. The finish is quite long.

Conclusion
On the nose, the Bowmore still seems to me to be smooth and a little bit contrived. You get the feeling that the flavours are only able to move forward with the handbrake on. The sherry casks clearly dominate the taste. The smoke plays second fiddle. On palate it is completely different. After a brief flash of the sweet, fruity PX notes, it becomes much spicier and the smoke takes off to show its ashy and bacony side. I have to say that I like it. The 43% also suits it well. Compared to the normal 18yo, this is much more sherried and rougher.
