Ardbeg TEN

 


Whiskybase

Nach dem fünfjährigen Wee Beastie wage ich mich mit dem TEN an die Ikone der Core Range von Ardbeg. Bin gespannt, auch hinsichtlich wie der Unterschied zum 5jährigen ist.  

Nase & Aussehen
Im Glas könnte man den Whisky farblich mit seinem hellen Strohgelb leicht mit einem Weißwein verwechseln. Kalter Holzkohlenrauch mit leichten medizinisch phenolischen Tendenzen zum Schluss hin. Der Rauch ist präsent, durchaus aber bei Leibe nicht erdrückend - er schiebt weniger kraftvoll nach vorne, wie beim nur halb so alten Wee Beastie. Die anderen Aromen lassen sich gut aufschlüsseln. Grüner knackiger Apfel mit schönen Citrusnoten. Eine sanfte Süße weht die gesamte Zeit im Hintergrund mit, zusammen mit einer Brise Vanille. Von Zeit zu Zeit kommt beim Riechen eine Spur von Jod in die Nase, hat etwas von Meer, Strand und Küste. 

Geschmack
Angenehmes, nicht allzu cremiges, süffige Mundgefühl. Der Rauch nimmt im Mund mehr phenolische Züge an. Die Zitrone und die Vanille aus der Nase sind auch im Geschmack ordentlich vorhanden, die Süße ist weniger prägnant wie angenommen. Dafür nun mehr italienische Küchenkräuter wie Rosmarien und Oregano. Die Eiche zeigt sich am Schluss mit einer angenehmen Herbe und einem leichten Prickeln.

Abgang
Das Finish zieht sich geschmacklich mittellang. Der Rauch, nun wieder mehr kaltaschig und holzkohlenartig bleibt noch länger im Mundraum haften. Das Holz von den Eichenfässern zeigt sich mit einer gewissen Ingwerschärfe und leichter Bitterkeit, für einen Espresso zu wenig, eher mitteldunkle Schokolade. Dazu noch Eindrücke von Vanille und Zitronenzesten.

Fazit
Der Rauch ist wirklich sehr harmonisch mit den anderen Aromen beim Geruch verwoben. Es ist nicht super filigran aber ich könnte ständig am Glas schnuppern.
Im Vergleich zum 5y ist der Ten im Geschmack gesetzter, klar bei einer doppelt so langen Verweildauer im Fass. Die Aromen sind milder und mehr miteinander im Einklang. Der Wee Beastie ist hier teilweise knackiger und wilder.
Der Ardbeg TEN gefällt, für einen 10jährigen Standard ist dies schon eine Hausnummer. Welchen würde ich mir zulegen? Den 5y Wee Beastie oder die Ikone TEN? Schwierig. Wirklich. Kann beiden etwas abgewinnen. Preislich müsste es der 10jährige sein, da beide in der selben Preisrange sind.

After the five-year-old Wee Beastie, I dare to try the icon of Ardbeg's Core Range with the TEN. Am curious, also regarding how the difference to the 5 year old is.  

Nose & Appearance
In the glass, the whiskey could easily be mistaken for a white wine in terms of color with its pale straw yellow. Cold charcoal smoke with slight medicinal phenolic tendencies towards the finish. The smoke is present, but by no means oppressive - it pushes forward less powerfully than in the Wee Beastie, which is only half as old. The other flavors break down well. Green crisp apple with nice citrus notes. A gentle sweetness wafts along in the background the entire time, along with a breeze of vanilla. A hint of iodine comes to the nose from time to time when smelling, has something of the sea, beach and coast. 

Taste
Pleasant, not too creamy, quaffable mouthfeel. The smoke takes on more phenolic traits in the mouth. The lemon and vanilla from the nose are neatly present in the taste as well, the sweetness is less prominent than anticipated. Instead, now more Italian kitchen herbs like rosemary and oregano. The oak shows up at the end with a pleasant astringency and a slight tingle.

Finish
The finish drags in terms of flavor with medium length. The smoke, now more cold-ashy and charcoal-like again lingers longer in the mouth. The wood from the oak barrels shows up with some ginger spiciness and slight bitterness, too little for an espresso, rather medium dark chocolate. In addition, impressions of vanilla and lemon zest.

Conclusion
The smoke is really very harmoniously interwoven with the other flavors when smelling. It's not super delicate but I could sniff the glass constantly.
Compared to the 5y, the Ten is more set in flavor, clearly with twice as much time in the barrel. The flavors are milder and more in tune with each other. The Wee Beastie is crisper and wilder in places here.
The Ardbeg TEN pleases, for a 10 year old standard this is quite a house number. Which one would I get? The 5y Wee Beastie or the iconic TEN? Difficult. Really. Can find something to like about both. Price wise, it would have to be the 10 year old as they are both in the same price range.
