Whiskybase
Bis dato habe ich um Ardbeg bewusst oder unbewusst, keine Ahnung, einen Bogen gemacht. Dies ändert sich nun. Nachdem ich schon ein paar Islay Malt im Glas hatte, muss nun auch die Whiskyreise nach Ardbeg führen. Und ich beginne bewusst mit der jüngsten OA Abfüllung, dem Wee Beastie 5y. Reifen durfte der junge Malt in Ex-Bourbon und Oloroso-Fässern und wird mit 47,4% Alkohol in die Flasche gefüllt. Der Wee Beastie ist mit nicht sowohl die jüngste Ergänzung der Core Range von Ardbeg sondern auch die an Reifejahren jüngste Abfüllung, die eine Jahreszahl am Label aufzuweisen hat.
Nase & Aussehen
Ölige Legs rinnen gemächlich am Glasrand hinab, das kleine Biest im Glas zeigt sich mit einem hellgoldenen Ton, einem Weißwein in de Farbe nicht unähnlich.
Kalter aschiger Rauch, viel Rauch. Holzkohlenrauch mit mineralischen Noten, so als wenn die Kohlen im Griller bereits Weiß werden. Aber auch in Richtung verbrannte Mullbinden geht der Rauchgeruch. Leichte Zitrone im Hintergrund. Etwas Vanille und ein wenig harzig, wie griechischer Retsinawein, könnte man auch mit einer Mischung von Küchenkräutern und zwischen den Fingern zerriebenen Fichtennadeln assoziieren. Mit ein wenig Zeit im Glas werden die zitrusfruchtigen Aromen mehr zur Orange, das Obst wird reifer.

Geschmack
Cremiges, öliges Mundgefühl. Der Rauch und Torf ist gleich ordentlich präsent. Aber dazu eine schöne Süße. Die Vanille sowie die Kräuter und die Zitrone aus dem Geruch sind auch hier im Geschmack sofort vorhanden. Leicht spritzig, pfeffrig geht es dann weiter.
Abgang
Der kaltaschige Rauch wird jetzt trockener. Die Kräuter sind weiterhin da. Die Zitrone wird nun eher zum etwas herberen Abrieb der Schale. Wenig Bitterkeit durch die Fässer, hier zeigt sich seine Jugend. Neben dem Torf und Rauch, der jetzt ein wenig an Motoröl erinnert, ist das Biest von mittellanger Zeit im Finish vorhanden.
Fazit
Lecker. Wirklich Lecker. Für 5 Jahre bekommt man einen mehr als soliden Islay Malt ohne Fehlnoten, der zwar kein Biest, aber weit weg von Biederkeit ist. Ordentlicher Raucher, sehr ansprechende Aromen - vor allem hervorzuheben ist diese interessante Kräutermischung - in der Nase und am Gaumen. Mit seiner Rohheit, man könnte es auch ein wenig Dreckigkeit nennen, erinnert er mich in Ansätzen an Springbank. Für einen gemütlichen Grillabend, hoffentlich auch bald mal wieder mit Freunden, genau das Richtige. Bin gespannt, um wieviel mehr der viel gelobte Ardbeg 10y zu bieten hat.

Nose & Appearance
Oily lees run leisurely down the rim of the glass, the little beastie in the glass shows off a light golden hue, not unlike a white wine in de color.Cold ashy smoke, lots of smoke. Charcoal smoke with mineral notes, as if the coals in the grill are already turning white. But the smoke smell also goes in the direction of burnt gauze. Light lemon in the background. Some vanilla and a little resinous, like Greek retsina wine, could also be associated with a mixture of kitchen herbs and spruce needles crushed between the fingers. With a little time in the glass, the citrusy aromas become more orange, the fruit ripens.
Taste
Creamy, oily mouthfeel. The smoke and peat is neatly present right away. But a nice sweetness to it. The vanilla and herbs and lemon from the smell are also immediately present here in the taste. Slightly tangy, peppery it then continues.
Finish
The cold ash smoke becomes drier now. The herbs continue to be there. The lemon now becomes more of a slightly tart abrasion of the zest. Little bitterness from the barrels, this is where its youth shows. Besides the peat and smoke, now a bit reminiscent of motor oil, the beast of medium length is present in the finish.
Conclusion
Yummy. Really Tasty. For 5 years you get a more than solid Islay malt with no off notes, not a beast but far from bland. Neat smoker, very appealing flavors - most notably that interesting blend of herbs - on the nose and palate. With its rawness, you could also call it a little dirtiness, it reminds me to some extent of Springbank. For a cozy barbecue, hopefully soon again with friends, just right. I'm curious to see how much more the much-praised Ardbeg 10y has to offer.
