Single Malts aus Ex-Bourbon Fässern, vor allem wenn sie schon ein paar Jährchen reifen durften, gefallen mir immer mehr. Besonders in den heißen Sommermonaten wie jetzt. Ihre erfrischend hellfruchtigen Aromen, gepaart mit einer schönen Vanille, und oft als Kontrapunkt eine angenehme Würze von den Fässern ihr eigen nennend, sind auch an warmen Sommerabenden ein idealer Begleiter.
Und genau so eine Abfüllung erhoffe ich mir, dass der 24jährige Glen Elgin ist. Gereift ist der Speysider in einem Hogshead-Fass und abgefüllt in einer angenehmen Trinkstärke von 48,5%.

Nase
Der Whisky startet gleich mit Volldampf los. Sofort ein Schwall an Aromen eines prall gefüllten Obstkorbs vor mir. Eine Mischung aus viel Honigmelone, reife Pfirsiche und andere hellen Früchten wie gelbe Äpfel, Bananen aber auch säuerliche Noten wie von Stachelbeeren. Dazu gesellt sich der Duft von frischen Wiesen aber auch etwas mineralisches Trockenes.
Auf Anhieb eine tolle fruchtige Bourbonnase. Und über dem gesamten Geruchspotpourri schwebt einnehmend eine Vanillenote. Der Alkohol zeigt sich immer wieder durch ein leichtes Prickeln und einer angenehmen Frische. Die Eiche der Fässer ist nicht wirklich zu merken. Mit ein, zwei Tropfen Wasser öffnet sich der Malt noch mehr. Neben den immer noch sehr intensiven Früchten zeigen sich nun auch blumige Aromen. Der Alkohol wird dezenter.
Geschmack
Ein cremiges, fast schon wächsernes Mundgefühl. Sehr weich. Viele Früchte, die Honigmelone, Pfirsich, Apfel, Birne, Trauben mit ordentlich Vanille und einem Gupf Schlagobers. Was man fruchtseitig im Geruch hatte, hat man nun auch auf der Zunge - ein schönes Obstkompott. Leichte Ingwerschärfe und eine spritzige Würzigkeit stellen sich der Fruchtbombe entgegen und sorgen für eine schöne harmonische Balance.
Auch im Geschmack helfen wenige Tropfen Wasserzugabe zu einem noch runder, weicheren Mundgefühl mit einer schönen Süße. Die leicht knackige Würzigkeit tritt etwas in den Hintergrund.
Abgang
Leichte Bitterkeit gegen Ende hin, weiterhin die Vanille mit süßen Nuancen und nun eher die Trauben mit Kern als Fruchtzusatz. Etwas kalkig, trocken werdend. Insgesamt ein mittleres bis langes Finale.
Fazit
Gerade bei so heißen Temperaturen, wie jetzt aktuell, favorisiere ich immer mehr klassische Ex-Bourbon Abfüllungen als intensive Sherry Malts. Und dieser 24jähriger Glen Elgin passt perfekt zum Sommer und den hohen Temperaturen. Eine tolle Fruchtbombe, sowohl in der Nase als auch beim Geschmack. Der Malt hat eigentlich alles, was man sich von einer Ex-Bourbon Abfüllung erwartet und erhofft. Die 24 Jahre Reifung merkt man, er ist nicht mehr ungestüm. Er ist ausgewogen aber nicht fad. Toller Sommerwhisky.

Single malts from ex-bourbon casks, especially when they have been allowed to mature for a few years, appeal to me more and more. Especially in the hot summer months like now. Their refreshing light-fruity aromas, paired with a nice vanilla, and often as a counterpoint a pleasant spiciness from the casks, are also an ideal companion on warm summer evenings.
And that's exactly the kind of bottling I hope the 24-year-old Glen Elgin is. The Speysider is matured in a hogshead cask and bottled at a pleasant drinking strength of 48.5%.
Appearance

Nose
The whisky starts off full steam ahead. Immediately, a torrent of aromas of a bulging fruit basket in front of me. A mixture of lots of honeydew melon, ripe peaches and other bright fruits like yellow apples, bananas but also sour notes like gooseberries. This is joined by the scent of fresh meadows but also something mineral dry.
A great fruity bourbon nose right away. And over the whole olfactory potpourri hovers an engaging vanilla note. The alcohol shows itself again and again with a slight tingle and a pleasant freshness. The oak of the barrels is not really noticeable. With a drop or two of water, the malt opens up even more. In addition to the still very intense fruits, floral aromas now show up. The alcohol becomes more discreet.
Taste
A creamy, almost waxy mouthfeel. Very soft. Lots of fruit, the honeydew melon, peach, apple, pear, grape with a fair amount of vanilla and a dollop of whipped cream. What you had in the smell on the fruit side, you now have on the tongue - a nice fruit compote. Slight ginger pungency and a tangy spiciness counter the fruit bomb and provide a nice harmonious balance.
On the palate, too, a few drops of added water help to create an even rounder, softer mouthfeel with a nice sweetness. The slightly crisp spiciness recedes somewhat into the background.
Finish
Slight bitterness towards the end, still the vanilla with sweet nuances and now the grape with core rather than fruit addition. A little chalky, becoming dry. Overall a medium to long finish.
Conclusion
Especially in such hot temperatures, as currently, I always favour classic ex-bourbon bottlings more than intense sherry malts. And this 24-year-old Glen Elgin fits perfectly to the summer and the high temperatures. A great fruit bomb, both on the nose and on the palate. The malt has everything you would expect and hope for from an ex-bourbon bottling. The 24 years of maturation are noticeable, it is no longer boisterous. It is balanced but not bland. Great summer whisky.
