Caol Ila hat einen enormen Output von mehreren Millionen Liter pro Jahr. Vieles davon geht in diverse Blends wie Johnnie Walker auf oder wird auch an die stetig wachsende Gemeinde der unabhängigen Abfüller verkauft. 

Erst Anfang der 2000er Jahre kam Caol Ila mit einer eigenen Standard Reihe auf den Markt. Diese besteht in der Zwischenzeit aus der NAS-Abfüllung Moch und den Flaschen mit Altersangabe Caol Ila 12y, 12y Distillers Edition, 18y und 25y. Darüber hinaus gibt es neben ein paar unpeated Versionen, wie den 15y oder 17y auch immer die jährliche Fèis Ìle Abfüllung.

Mit dem Caol Ila 12y habe ich eine weitere Lücke in meiner Liste der Standard Abfüllungen von Islay Brennereien abgehakt. Ich bin der Meinung, man muss die Core Ranges einer Brennerei kennen um sich ein gutes Bild über deren Destillat machen zu können. Der Einsteiger in die Age Statement Reihe reift in Ex-Bourbon Casks, ist leider kältefiltriert sowie gefärbt, und wird mit 43% abgefüllt.

Aussehen
Chardonnay Weißwein

Nase
Gleich angenehmer Lagerfeuerrauch mit einer bereits deutlichen Aschebildung zu Beginn im Geruch. Aber auch sofort starke süße, fruchtbetonte Aromen nach reifen sizilianischen Zitronen aber auch fleischigen Pfirsiche. Mit mehr Sauerstoff im Glas und Standzeit wechseln die Fruchtkomponente hin zu gelben und grünen Äpfel und saftigen Birnen mit einer ordentlichen Portion Vanille.
Und die gesamte Zeit weht im Hintergrund ein Duft nach Heftpflaster. Auch mineralisch, nach Jod - die frische Brise vom Meer, wenn es auf den Kieselstrand trifft. Die 43% sind sehr gut eingebunden, kein Stechen oder sonstige Störfaktoren durch den Alkohol. 

Geschmack
Schöner ausgewogener Antritt und weiches Mundgefühl. Sogleich mit einer deutlichen Süße und viel Obst, vorrangig Zitrone sowie Äpfel und Birnen, und Vanille. Der Rauch ist natürlich ebenfalls vorhanden, aber überhaupt nicht dominant. Er ist nun mehr auf der aschigen Seite. Ein paar Kräuter aus der Küche zusammen mit der Jodtinktur zeigen sich nach dem Fruchtkorb. Im Mittelteil meldet sich das Holz der Fässer, es wird mehr würzig und es kommt eine leichte Ingwer- und Pfeffernote zum Vorschein, aber immer noch ausgewogen. Trotz der nicht hohen Prozente an Alkohol werden die Aromen anständig auf die Zunge gebracht. 

Abgang
Es bleibt der Rauch mit den Küchenkräutern sowie der würzigen Note lange im Finish bemerkbar. Sehr angenehm. Leichte bittere Aspekte nach Espresso und geriebener Zitronenschale. 

Fazit
Ein sehr schöner zwölfjähriger Islay-Standard. Durchwegs harmonisch ohne fad zu wirken. Die Nase ist überraschend fruchtbetont. Dies wird im Geschmack durch eine angenehme Würzigkeit ausbalanciert. Die „nur“ 43% reichen vollkommen aus. Ein sehr schöner Whisky für jede Gelegenheit und ein guter Einstieg in die Range von Caol Ila.

Caol Ila has an enormous output of several million litres per year. Much of this goes into various blends such as Johnnie Walker or is also sold to the ever-growing community of independent bottlers. 

It was not until the early 2000s that Caol Ila came onto the market with its own standard range. In the meantime, this consists of the NAS bottling Moch and the bottles with the age statement Caol Ila 12y, 12y Distillers Edition, 18y and 25y. In addition to a few unpeated versions, such as the 15y or 17y, there is always the annual Fèis Ìle bottling.

With the Caol Ila 12y, I have ticked off another gap in my list of standard bottlings from Islay distilleries. I believe you need to know the core ranges of a distillery to get a good idea of its distillate. This newcomer to the Age Statement range is matured in ex-bourbon casks, is unfortunately cold-filtered and coloured, and is bottled at 43%.

Appearance

Nose
Immediately pleasant campfire smoke with an already noticeable ashiness at the start of the smell. But also immediately strong sweet, fruity aromas of ripe Sicilian lemons but also fleshy peaches. With more oxygen in the glass and standing time, the fruit components change to yellow and green apples and juicy pears with a good portion of vanilla.
And the whole time, a scent of sticking plaster wafts in the background. Mineral too, of iodine - the fresh breeze from the sea as it hits the pebbly beach. The 43% is very well integrated, no stinging or other disturbing factors from the alcohol. 

Taste
Nice balanced attack and soft mouthfeel. Immediately with a distinct sweetness and lots of fruit, primarily lemon and apples and pears, and vanilla. The smoke is there too, of course, but not at all dominant. It is now more on the ashy side. A few herbs from the kitchen together with the iodine tincture show up after the fruit basket. In the middle part, the wood of the barrels announces itself, it becomes more spicy and a slight ginger and pepper note appears, but still balanced. Despite the not high percentages of alcohol, the flavours are decently brought to the tongue. 

Finish
There remains the smoke with the culinary herbs as well as the spicy note noticeable for a long time in the finish. Very pleasant. Slight bitter aspects after espresso and grated lemon peel. 

Conclusion
A very nice twelve-year-old Islay standard. Harmonious throughout without being bland. The nose is surprisingly fruity. This is balanced by a pleasant spiciness in the taste. The "only" 43% is completely sufficient. A very nice whisky for every occasion and a good introduction to the Caol Ila range.
