Glenlivet XXV

Whiskybase

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After tasting the Glenlivet 18y and Glenlivet 21y, the Glenlivet XXV is the oldest bottling from the standard range of the well-known Speyside distillery, which i have had in my glass so far. After maturing for 23 years in American white oak casks, the XXV was given a 24-month finish in Spanish first fill Oloroso sherry casks. It is not coloured, but chill-filtered.

Nose & Appearance
The XXV presents itself with a dark gold to light amber colour. The tears run slowly and oily down the rim of the glass. Immediately vanilla and this distinct aroma of ripe oranges and of orange oil, I had this also in the nose of the 18 year old as well as the 21 year old. Ripe red apples and pears, vineyard peach and scent of apricots. Very fruity and fresh. Behind this great fruity nose, a flowery perfumed smell wafted into the nose. Less noticeable of the 25 years, just a hint of aromatic oak. The alcohol is absolutely not noticeable. No stinging or burning in the nose. After the first taste, it becomes darker and more set in the nose as well.

Taste
A nice creamy mouthfeel. An initial slight sweet aspect is followed very quickly by a surprisingly spicy note. Now the age is there! Almost something like smoke can now be tasted - clearly "owed" to the long ageing in the oak casks. Dark chocolate and creamy Italian espresso. Hazelnuts as well as leather and tobacco flavours also add to the tart basic structure of the taste. On the fruit side, the classic sherry flavours are now present. The bright fruits from the nose have dissipated.

Finish
Towards the finish I continue to have toasted hazelnuts as well as the light smoke association with leather and tobacco. The oak also shows up here with dark chocolate. The quarter of a century of maturation is now showing very nicely. Everything is very balanced and solid.

Conclusion
As has always been the case with Glenlivet, the influence of the sherry finish is never very dominant for me on the nose. Very nice lighter and tropical fruit components reign there. The taste is surprisingly spicy. The smoke as well as leather and tobacco flavours are pleasing. It is definitely a clear improvement on the 21-year-old. Unfortunately, the price of around €300 is very ambitious and too high. Of the bottlings tasted so far, it is certainly the best Glenlivet.
