Springbank 10y

Whiskybase

Tolles Potpourri an Aromen.

Geschmack

Intensive Aromen, keine Fehlnoten. Tolle Nase und einen markanten Geschmack. Was will man mehr?! Der 10y steht definitiv auf meiner Long-List!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After the Kilkerran 12y from Glengyle, my journey of exploration in Campbeltown continues with the Springbank 10y. The 10y is the starter in Springbank's Core Range. Founded in 1828, the distillery is very popular among malt fans. Perhaps also because the entire production process is still done 100% on site here - and much of it is still done by hand. Pure nostalgia for us single malts enthusiasts. Besides Springbank, the distillery also produces malts under the names Hazelburn (triple distilled and light spirit) and Longrow (heavily peated and smoky).

The Springbank 10 is a combination of ex-bourbon and sherry casks, I could not find out the exact distribution of the casks. Sources speak of 60% or 70% ex-bourbon to 40% or 30% sherry casks. Bottled at 46% alcohol strength.

Nose & Appearance
The colour is a dark yellow in the glass. Intense aroma of ripe apricots and peaches. Impressions of herbs and meadow. Hardly any smoke and peat - rather subliminal underlining the other aromas. Sweet floral honey. The nose reminds with its freshness and minerality of a nice spicy white wine from Italy, e.g. a Pino Grigio. Slightly minty in the background, like when you sniff into an After Eight pack. After the first sip, the fruits on the nose become lighter, more lemony, more like red grapefruit. Very nice bourbon nose, the proportionate barrels are clearly pushing forward. Great potpourri of aromas.

Taste
Oily mouthfeel. In the mouth more smoke and peat than in the nose.   Now the spicy components of the oak casks are more prominent than their fruity counterpoints. Now you are in the harbour with the fishing boats and the diesel in the seawater. The sherry casks show through with leather and tobacco notes now. With the second tasting, the sweetness from the nose also comes through, although not as intensely, as does the citrus more.

Finish
The peat and sherry flavours continue to be present. Moderate bitterness and becoming a little dry towards the end. With further tasting, a remnant of fruit sweetness still shows in the finish. Medium length finish.

Conclusion
Ok. I now better understand the praise of Campbeltown fans when they rave about Springbank and then also about the 10-year-old, the entry drug into the distillery's range. What they get out of a 10-year-old is great cinema. Intense aromas, no missing notes. Great nose and a distinctive taste. What more could you want? The 10y is definitely on my long list!
