Excellence Rhum Collection 2023 Bielle 515 Vintage 2017

Rum-X-Eintrag

English-Text-Version

After the 15-year-old Saint James, the second sample in Excellence Rhum's 10th anniversary series takes me to Guadeloupe. Or, to be more precise, to the small offshore island of Marie-Gallante. This island, which is just under an hour's boat ride from Guadeloupe and has a population of nearly 12,000, is home to Poisson, Bellevue and the Bielle distillery.

And this is the distillery from which this sample comes. This is the vintage bottling of Bielle 515 Vintage 2017. Matured for over five years in ex-bourbon casks, this rhum is made from fresh sugar cane juice. Only 249 bottles of this single cask bottling are available, with a cask strength of 57.6% abv.

Appearance
Deep gold, pale amber.

Nose
From the glass, the nose is very soft, round and light. The fairly high alcohol is well integrated. It is hardly noticeable, except for here and there in the form of a piece of chocolate mint leaf. The first aromas are sweet, soft caramels, a still warm, fragrant fruit cake with vanilla. Nutmeg, oriental incense, cinnamon and a good portion of orange peel follow with more time and oxygen in the glass. The spicy oak notes gather pace with time, but remain very aromatic and delicate throughout - absolutely no oakiness.

Palate
The palate is very silky and creamy at the start. Surprisingly sweet caramel mixed with blossom honey at the beginning. This impression is reinforced by pleasant fruit flavours of orange and mango. A hint of pepper acts as a welcome counterpoint to the sweetness of the fruit, which is reinforced by a few slices of ginger. The spiciness fades away relatively quickly. Fresh notes of vanilla with a hint of green grass and fresh sugar cane juice round off the flavour profile. The spicy oak notes are present. However, they never dominate the potpourri of flavours.

Finish
Long in the mouth, dried tobacco leaves with nutmeg, orange peel and prunes flank the oak notes with dark chocolate and cocoa. Towards the end, the mouth becomes drier, but at the same time a slight sweetness reappears, sliding down the throat for a long, warming time.

Conclusion
While I'm writing these notes and the rum has been in the glass for half an hour, I almost forget I have a rum in front of me. It could just as easily have been a great Single Malt from Speyside matured in a bourbon cask. Great orange notes with vanilla came out of the glass.

Beautiful facets of a rhum agricole that has fine oak aromas, but is also surprisingly fruity and sweet. This is what makes it so welcoming to newcomers to the world of rhum agricole. The oak flavour is not too dominant. The fresh, sweet fruit notes make for a very pleasant, refined drinking experience. Despite its high alcohol content, adding water is absolutely unnecessary.

Saint James ✕ Excellence Rhum 2006 10th anniversary of ER

Rum-X-Eintrag

English-Text-Version

Alexandre Beudet, co-founder of Excellence Rhum in Paris, sent me a couple of weeks ago two samples of bottles that had been specially selected to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the company. Excellence Rhum is not only a well-known online r(h)um shop, it also has a shop in Paris with over 2,500 bottlings. Some of these have been specially bottled for Excellence Rhum, such as the two rhums that I'm now tasting.

The first bottling that I am about to taste is the Saint James ✕ Excellence Rhum 2006 - 10th anniversary of the ER. Aged for 15 years in 190-litre American ex-bourbon barrels at Sainte-Marie in Martinique, this Martinique rhum agricole is 53.1% abv. In all, 1,260 bottles were bottled.

Appearance
Mahogany colour with hints of orange saffron

Nose
Right from the start, the glass is filled with a fantastic bouquet of aromas and flavours. The potpourri of aromas is very full, with a real depth and, at the same time, very homogeneous. The cask strength is not really noticeable. A very intense aromatic toasted oak, lots of spices like nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves. There is also a hint of eucalyptus that wafts around the nose. This provides a fresh note and a nice counterpoint to the initially dominant oak and oriental spices. Lightly resinous aromas of crushed pine needles emerge with more air and time in the glass. The fruit remains in the background but becomes more pronounced with more oxygen. Preserved plum jam with a delicate acidity that could have come from a stewed apricot in which a few orange peels have found their way.

The Saint Jaimes opens up beautifully with a few drops of water. Aromatic woody notes with eucalyptus are still very present. The fruity notes are now more pronounced and fuller. Surprisingly, floral aromas emerge, especially the scent of violets. Interesting. There is also a delicate sweetness that can now be detected.

Flavour
Very intense and full on the palate. A light toffee sweetness appears briefly at first. But the wood of the toasted oak quickly takes the upper hand again in the mouth. Lots of cinnamon and nutmeg with a hint of clove. Black tea that has been steeped for a long time, the bitter notes increase and it becomes astringent. Dark chocolate with sultanas and a hint of leather and tobacco. The plum jam from the nose is now more concentrated. The apricots are now dried and add beautiful fruity flavours. The alcohol is also very well integrated in the mouth.

On the palate, the water dilution perhaps weakens the oak a little. The sweetness, which is initially fleeting, lingers a little longer. On the whole, however, the structure of the flavours remains pretty much the same.

Finish
The mint, in combination with the dry bitter notes of the oak, is very prominent. Sultanas and dried apricots are in the background. Nutmeg and cinnamon linger very long. On the tongue and in the throat, the rum lingers literally forever.

The shop hosts weekly masterclasses, tastings and workshops. A true mecca for rum lovers!

Conclusion
An outstanding Rhum Agcricole. The great harmony in the nose between the notes of the wood and the aromas of the spices is like great cinema. And the interplay of flavours on the palate is no less impressive. So intense and at the same time so overwhelming. It is demanding and wants to be explored. It is not a rum to be sipped on the side. This Agricole needs attention and time, which should be given. It is very fine and delicate - pure as well as with the addition of a little bit of water. Unfortunately, the sample is already empty. But I console myself with the thought that I still have another sample of Alexandre in front of me. If this one is anywhere near as good, I can look forward to some great moments of pleasure. And no, I won't tell you what the second bottling is.
