Die gesamte Standardreihe von Malteco, wie auch der Malteco 25y, stammt aus der Kreationsschmiede des Italieners Marco Savio, der auch schon hinter Malecon Rum steht. Die Produktion passierte ursprünglich in in der Destillerie Licorera Quezalteca in Guatemala. 2011 kaufte Diageo das Unternehmen und beschloss die Produktionsstätten hauptsächlich für seine Marken Botran und Zacapa zu verwenden. Aus diesem Grund übersiedelte die Marke Malteco nach Panama und wird seit dem in der Caribbean Spirits Panama Distillery hergestellt. Der guatemaltekische Rum-Stil wurde aber beibehalten, so dient als Basis eingekochter Zuckerrohrsaft (virgin sugar cane honey) anstatt der meist bei der Rum-Produktion üblichen Melasse. Dieser Rohstoff wird beispielsweise auch beim bekannten Ron Zacapa verarbeitet.
Wie so oft in der Rum-Welt ist auch beim Malteco die Jahresangabe am Label nur ein Richtwert und nicht wie beim schottischen Single Malt eine verbindliche Altersangabe. So verbergen sich hier verschieden alte Rums, die bis zu 25 Jahre alt sein können. Exakte Informationen findet man natürlich keine, im Internet gibt es Hinweise, dass die Rums in diesem Blend zwischen 19 und 25 Jahre alt sein sollen. Mit 40% Alkoholstärke und gefärbt kommt der Rum in die Flasche.
Aussehen

Nase
Sehr angenehme leicht fruchtige und zugleich süße Nase mit viel Vanille, weichem Karamell mit Marillenmarmelade und getrockneten Bananenechips. Auch ein paar mit Zimt bestreute Kokosraspeln in Milchschokolade getaucht, finden sich im Geruch wieder. Etwas frische Minze blinzelt immer wieder hervor. Eine nicht allzu intensive aber doch bemerkbare Eichenwürze zeugt von der längeren Reifezeit und dem Alter. Insgesamt ist der Geruch sehr weich, die Aromen sind sehr harmonisch mit einander verwoben.
Geschmack
Ein seidenes Mundgefühl mit einem sanften Antritt, aufgrund des nicht allzu hohen Alkoholgehalts. Die fruchtig süße Marillenmarmelade bekommt Unterstützung von Vanille, Karamell, Kokosnuss und saftigen Rosinen. Dazu kommt Milchschokolade mit einer Handvoll gerösteter Mandeln. Leichte Holzaromen sorgen für einen angenehmen Kontrapunkt zum grundsätzlich süßen Grundcharakter. Jedoch ist die Süße hier im Gegensatz zu anderen Vertretern des spanischen Stils nicht überbordend und hält sich gut die Waage. Wenn, dann wurde hier nur wenig mit Zucker nachgeholfen.
Abgang
Eine leichte bittere Note von gerösteten Mandeln und Kokosraspeln sorgt für eine feine Annäherung des Holzeinflusses der Ex-Bourbonfässer. Immer noch die Vanille und die Honigsüße im schmeckend geht es in Richtung mittellanges Finish.
Fazit
Die 25jährige Abfüllung gefällt mir deutlich besser als ihre fünf Jahre jüngere Variante. Die Aromen sind, obwohl weich und ausgewogen, doch intensiver und ausgeprägter, als beim 20jährigen. Ja, es ist sicherlich mit etwas Zucker nachgeholfen worden. Aber wie schon bei den anderen Jahrgängen wurde auch bei der ältesten Variante nicht übertrieben. Es ist nicht mein favorisierter Rum-Stil, aber er ist handwerklich gut gemacht. Sowohl für Einsteiger wie Rumliebhabern, die es auch mal gerne weicher und süßer mögen, eine gute Alternative zu Zacapa Rum und Co.

The entire Malteco core range, including Malteco 25y, comes from the creative workshop of Italian Marco Savio, who is also behind Malecon Rum. The production was originally carried out at the distillery of Licorera Quezalteca in Guatemala. Diageo bought the company in 2011, with the intention of using the production facilities primarily for its Botran and Zacapa brands. As a result, the Malteco brand moved to Panama and has since been in production at the Caribbean Spirits Panama distillery. However, the Guatemalan rum style has been retained. The base is boiled sugar cane juice (virgin sugar cane honey) instead of the molasses usually used in rum making. The famous Ron Zacapa, for example, also uses this raw material.
As is so often the case in the rum world, the age stated on the Malteco label is only a guideline. It is not a binding indication of age, as is the case with Scottish Single Malt. This means that there are rums of varying ages, up to 25 years. There is of course no exact information. However, there are indications on the internet that the rums in this blend are between 19 and 25 years old. The rum is bottled at 40% abv and coloured.
Appearance

Nose
Very pleasant, slightly fruity and sweet nose with lots of vanilla, soft caramel with apricot jam and dried banana chips. A few pieces of grated coconut, sprinkled with cinnamon and dipped in milk chocolate, can also be found on the palate. A hint of fresh mint can be detected from time to time. A not too intense, but still noticeable, oak flavour is evidence of the long maturation and age. All in all, the aroma is very soft and the flavours are woven together in a very harmonious way.
Palate
Silky in the mouth, with a soft start due to the low alcohol content. The fruity, sweet apricot jam is supported by vanilla, caramel, coconut and juicy sultanas. There is also milk chocolate with a handful of roasted almonds. Light woody notes provide a pleasant counterpoint to the fundamentally sweet character. However, unlike other Spanish styles, the sweetness here is not excessive and well balanced. If anything, only a little sugar has been added.
Finish
A slightly bitter note of toasted almonds and grated coconut, with a subtle hint of wood from the ex-bourbon casks. There are still hints of vanilla and honey sweetness, and the finish is medium length.
Conclusion
I like the 25-year-old bottling much better than its five-year-younger variant. The flavours, although soft and balanced, are more intense and developed than the 20-year-old. Yes, some additional sugar has certainly been added. But as with the other bottlings of Maltecos core range, the oldest version has not been sugar-coated. It is not my favourite style of rum, but it is well crafted. A good alternative to Zacapa rum and others for beginners as well as rum lovers who like it softer and sweeter.
