Ein weiteres Probe-Sample von whic.de ist in meinem Briefkasten gelandet! Dieses Mal ist es die sechste Abfüllung aus der 13teiligen Serie Spirits of the Forest. Ein Benrinnes mit zwölf Jahren Reifungszeit in einem 2nd Fill-Oloroso Sherry Butt. Wie in der Serie üblich ohne Färbung und Kühlfiltration mit 47% Alkoholgehalt in die Flasche gefüllt.

Nase
Nicht nur aus der doch recht hellen Farbe, auch im Geruch lässt sich erkennen, dass das verwendete 2nd Fill Sherryfass nicht allzu freigiebig mehr mit seinen Aromen war. Der Brennereicharakter hat noch genug Raum bekommen sich zu zeigen. Neben einer süßen Malznote zeigen sich im Premium Snifter Glas rote reife Äpfel. Weitere Fruchtnoten steuern etwas Marillen- und Orangenkonfitüre dazu, die hinter dem anfänglichen Getreide- und Nussmix hervor blitzen. Von rotem Beerenobst oder ähnlich typischen Sherryaromen ist wenig zu riechen. Im Hintergrund ist eine dezent würzige Seite vorhanden, wie aromatischer frisch gemahlener schwarzer Pfeffer, nur leicht aber bemerkbar - könnte vom Fass kommen. Nach dem ersten und zweiten Schluck verändert dich die Nase. Die Marille wird deutlicher und es kommen zusätzlich doch noch Anklänge von Beeren und Vanille hinzu.
Parallel habe ich mir den Whisky, neben dem Premium Snifter, auch in das Nosing Glas von Simple Sample eingeschenkt. Und siehe da, hier entwickelt sich der Benrinnes viel fruchtiger und süßer! Die roten Äpfel sind nun ein mit Karamell zubereitetes Kompott, die Marillen switchen ebenfalls von Konfitüre zu Kompott mit beigemischtem Orangensaftkonzentrat. Vanille zeigt sich deutlicher. Die malzigen und nussigen Aromen sind im Hintergrund. Das Prickeln vom Pfeffer ist auch hier im Nachklang in der Nase zu spüren. Interessant wieder einmal, wie sich ein Whisky in unterschiedlichen Gläsern verhält.
Geschmack
Beim Verkosten aus dem Premium Snifter gleitet der Malt ölig und weich in den Mundraum. Ein kräftiger Antritt, der mit einer angenehmen Süße von Honig beginnt. Begleitet wird die Süße von hellen Fruchtaromen von Äpfeln und etwas Marille, die beim dritten Schluck noch Unterstützung durch Himbeeren bekommen. Danach übernimmt eine Würzigkeit mit deutlichem Pfefferanteil die Führung im Geschmack.
Aus dem Nosing Glas ist er überraschend gleich von Beginn an würziger und mehr auf der pfeffrigen Seite des Geschmacksspektrums angesiedelt. Viel weniger Süße und Fruchtanteil. Hier gefällt mir der Geschmack aus dem Premium Snifter deutlich besser.
Abgang
Gegen Ende hin blitzen beim Premium Snifter mittelschwere bittere Noten nach dunkler Schokolade auf. Die Eiche zeigt sich mehr. Aber auch weiterhin sind fruchtige Aromen vorhanden, auch mit etwas Vanille. Insgesamt ist es ein mittellanges Finish.
Fazit
Sehr interessantes Experiment, wie sich der Geruch und Geschmack eines Single Malts in verschiedenen Gläsern deutlich unterscheiden kann. Insgesamt liegen der Benrinnes 12y aus der Spirits of the Forest-Reihe und ich nicht ganz auf der selben Wellenlänge. Das bereits einmal verwendete Sherryfass hat zwar Raum für den Benrinnes eigenen Brennereicharakter gelassen, jedoch hätte ich mir etwas mehr Sherryanteil - und hier vor allem in punkto typischer Sherry-Fruchtigkeit - gewünscht. Auch die leichte Schärfe in der Nase, die sich auch im Mund weiterzieht, hätte weniger sein können - vor allem, wenn man bedenkt, dass hier mit „nur“ 47% abgefüllt wurde. Er ist aber ein grundsolider Single Malt, der gut gemacht ist, nur eben nicht exakt mein Geschmacksprofil trifft. Das Preis/Leistungsverhältnis mit rund € 55,- Ausgabepreis ist sehr in Ordnung.

Another sample from whic.de has landed in my letterbox! This time it's the sixth bottling from the 13-part Spirits of the Forest series. A Benrinnes with twelve years of maturation in a 2nd Fill Oloroso Sherry Butt. As usual in the series, bottled without colouring and chill filtration at 47% alcohol.

Appearance
Golden amber
Nose
Not only from the rather light colour, but also from the smell it is obvious that the 2nd fill sherry cask used was not too generous with its aromas. The distillery character still has enough room to show itself. Besides a sweet malt note, red ripe apples show up in the Premium Snifter glass. Other fruity notes add a little apricot and orange jam, which peek out from behind the initial mix of cereals and nuts. There is little red berry fruit or similar typical sherry aromas. There is a subtle spicy side in the background, like aromatic freshly ground black pepper, only slightly but noticeable - could come from the cask. After the first and second sip, the nose changes. The apricot becomes clearer and there are also hints of berries and vanilla.
At the same time, I poured the whisky into the Simple Sample nosing glass, in addition to the Premium Snifter. And lo and behold, here the Benrinnes develops much more fruity and sweet! The red apples are now a compote prepared with caramel, the apricots also switch from jam to compote with added orange juice concentrate. Vanilla shows up more clearly. The malty and nutty flavours are in the background. The tingle from the pepper can also be felt here in the aftertaste in the nose. Interesting once again how a whisky behaves in different glasses.
Taste
Tasting from the Premium Snifter, the malt glides oily and smoothly into the mouth. A strong attack that starts with a pleasant sweetness of honey. The sweetness is accompanied by bright fruit aromas of apples and a little apricot, which are supported by raspberries on the third sip. After that, a spiciness with a clear pepper component takes the lead in the taste.
From the nosing glass, it is surprisingly spicier right from the start and more on the peppery side of the taste spectrum. Much less sweetness and fruit content. Here I like the taste from the Premium Snifter much better.
Finish
Towards the end, medium bitter notes of dark chocolate flash up in the Premium Snifter. The oak shows more. But fruity flavours continue to be present, with some vanilla as well. Overall, it's a medium-long finish.
Conclusion
Very interesting experiment in how the smell and taste of a single malt can differ significantly in different glasses. Overall, the Benrinnes 12y from the Spirits of the Forest range and I are not quite on the same wavelength. The sherry cask, which has already been used once, has left room for Benrinnes' own distillery character, but I would have liked a little more sherry content - and here especially in terms of typical sherry fruitiness. The slight spiciness in the nose, which continues in the mouth, could also have been less - especially when you consider that this was bottled at "only" 47%. But it is a rock-solid single malt that is well made, just not exactly meeting my taste profile. The price/performance ratio of around € 55,- is very reasonable.
