Bowmore 12y

 

Whiskybase

Von Bowmore, der ältesten Brennerei auf Islay, hatte ich bislang nur den 15jährigen im Glas. Wird Zeit die Standard Range weiter zu ergründen. Anfang macht der 12jährige. Reifen darf er 12 Jahre in Bourbon- und Sherryfässern und wird vor dem Abfüllen in die Flaschen vermischt, bzw. vermählt. Leider färbt und kühlfiltert Bowmore und vergönnt dem 12jährigen nur einen Alkoholgehalt von 40%.  Von den Grunddaten haben wir es mit einem ordentlichen Einsteiger in die Welt des Bowmore-Rauches zu tun. Mal sehen was die Nase und der Geschmack meinen. 

Nase & Aussehen
Die Farbe wäre ein dunkles Gold mit orangem Einschlag, jedoch färbt Bowmore und somit ist die Farbe sekundär. Angenehme süße Raucharomen strömen aus dem Premium Snifter. Etwas phenolischer Rauch zusammen mit Honig und zarten Zitrusnoten. Danach zeigt sich Leder, wachsige Holzpolitur und Aromen von getrockneten Früchten von Marillen und Orangen. Im Hintergrund schwebt die gesamte Zeit eine sanfte salzige Meeresbrise.

Geschmack
Das Mundgefühl ist leicht, etwas wässrig. Der nicht so hohe Alkoholgehalt von 40% spielt hier sicherlich mit. Der Rauch ist sofort präsent. Auch eine leichte Süße ist erkennbar - aber nicht mehr so intensiv, wie zuvor im Geruch. Dann wird es kräuteriger und die Eiche zeigt sich erstmals mit ein wenig Würze und weißem Pfeffer sowie leichter Bitterkeit. Die getrockneten Früchte aus dem Geruch habe ich leider nicht mehr. Überhaupt ist wenig Fruchteinfluss im Geschmack vorhanden.

Abgang
Das Finish gestaltet sich, dem leichten Alkoholgehalt geschuldet, eher von kurzer Dauer. Der Rauch ist natürlich weiterhin präsent. Etwas schwarzer Kaffee mit Zitronenabrieb. Die Sherryfässer zeigen sich hier nochmals mit altem Lederaromen. 

Fazit
Ein einfacher geradliniger Standard für Einsteiger. In der Nase zuerst Rauch dann zeigen sich die Bourbonfässer. Mit ein paar Minuten im Glas kommen auch die verwendeten Sherryfässer. Im Mund viel würziger und herber mit einem kurzen Abgang. Der 15y ist hier schon ein anderes Kaliber mit seinem deutlichen Sherryprofil. Trotzdem ein ordentliches PLV, wenn man ihn um rund € 25,- bekommt.

From Bowmore, the oldest distillery on Islay, I've only had the 15-year-old in my glass so far. It's time to explore the standard range further. I'll start with the 12 year old. It is allowed to mature for 12 years in bourbon and sherry casks and is blended before bottling. Unfortunately, Bowmore colours and chill-filters and only allows the 12-year-old an alcohol content of 40%.  From the basic data, we are dealing with a decent entrant into the world of Bowmore smoking. Let's see what the nose and taste think. 

Nose & appearance
The colour would be a dark gold with an orange tinge, however Bowmore colours and so the colour is secondary. Pleasant sweet smoke aromas flow from the premium snifter. Some phenolic smoke along with honey and delicate citrus notes. Then leather, waxy wood polish and flavours of dried fruits of apricots and oranges show up. A gentle salty sea breeze hovers in the background the entire time.

Taste
The mouthfeel is light, somewhat watery. The not so high alcohol content of 40% certainly plays a part here. The smoke is immediately present. A slight sweetness is also noticeable - but not as intense as before in the nose. Then it becomes more herbal and the oak shows up for the first time with a little spice and white pepper as well as slight bitterness. Unfortunately, I no longer have the dried fruits from the smell. There is little fruit influence in the taste at all.

Finish
Due to the light alcohol content, the finish is rather short-lived. The smoke is still present, of course. Some black coffee with lemon zest. The sherry casks show themselves again here with old leather aromas. 

Conclusion
A simple straightforward standard for beginners. In the nose first smoke then the bourbon casks show up. With a few minutes in the glass, the sherry casks used also appear. In the mouth much more spicy and tart with a short finish. The 15y is a different calibre with its clear sherry profile. Nevertheless, a decent PLV when you get it for around € 25.

Old Raven 6y The Torrero

 

Whiskybase

Mit dem "The Torrero" habe ich hier nach dem "The Gentle" die zweite Abfüllung aus der kleinen burgenländischen Brennerei Old Raven im Glas. Und auch diesmal ist es eine Sonderabfüllung eines Einzelfasses für die World Wide Whisky Gruppe. Sechs Jahre reifte der Malt in einem PX-Fass und wurde mit 56,2% in die Flaschen gebracht.

Nase & Aussehen
Die Farbe ist dunkler Bernstein. Sehr ölig, richtig gehen schmierig am Glasrand, macht Lust auf mehr! Deutliche Anzeichen von Sherryeinfluss, rote dunkle Früchte, getrocknete Feigen, Rosinen. Süß. Spuren von After Eight im Hintergrund - eine schöne Kombo von Schokolade mit Pfefferminze. Saft und Zesten von Blutorangen. Immer wieder Assoziation von Rauch, dies muss die Eiche sein. Der Alkohol mit knapp 56% zeigt sich leicht mit einem Ziehen in der Nase, jedoch nicht unangenehm.
Nach dem ersten Schluck nimmt steigert sich die Schokolade im Geruch, auch Haselnüsse sind nun zu erkennen. Mit Wasser nimmt die Pfefferminze und der Rauchaspekt zu. Auch leichte florale Noten lassen sich nun im Hintergrund erahnen. Die Furchtkomponenten bleiben jedoch weiterhin im Sherryfrucht-Spektrum.

Geschmack
Sehr süßer Beginn, hier punktet voll das PX-Fass. Leder und Tabak sind nun sehr deutlich. Die Blutorange, aus der Nase, ist ebenso zu schmecken. Die Eiche kommt mit Würze, die man auch als Rauch assoziieren könnte. Danach getrocknete Küchenkräuter, Alkohol präsent, hitzig und wärmend. Mit Wasser noch mehr auf der süßen Seite und die Gewürze werden prägend. Immer noch angenehm wärmend und voll - der kann schon ordentlich Wasser nehmen.

Abgang
Auch zum Ende hin weiterhin süß, auch die Kräuter spielen im Geschmacksensemble weiterhin mit. Ganz leichte Bitterkeit, Leder und Tabak. Im Finish kommt der Alkohol nochmals und schiebt ordentlich an. Eher mittellang der Abgang, aber dies ist bei der Reifezeit von 6 Jahren auch nicht überraschend. Mit Wasser wird das Finish etwas in die Länge gezogen.

Fazit
Toller Tropfen, wenn man es nicht weiß, würde man hier nie und nimmer auf KEINEN Schotten tippen. Trotz seiner Jugend gibt es k eine metallischen Aromen im Geruch oder Geschmack, keine Fehlaromen. Brennmeister Andi von Old Raven versteht wirklich sein Handwerk. Ein Kraftpaket. Kann man gut mit Wasser spielen. Mit etwas Verdünnung und Zeit im Glas wird er gefährlich süffig. Wer PX mag, ist hier gut aufgehoben.

With "The Torrero" I have the second bottling from the small austrian distillery Old Raven in my glass after "The Gentle". And this time, too, it is a special bottling of a single cask for the World Wide Whisky Group. The malt matured for six years in a PX cask and was bottled at 56.2%.

Nose & appearance
The colour is dark amber. Very oily, really going greasy at the edge of the glass, makes you want more! Clear signs of sherry influence, red dark fruits, dried figs, sultanas. Sweet. Traces of After Eight in the background - a nice combo of chocolate with peppermint. Juice and zest of blood oranges. Always associations of smoke, this must be the oak. The alcohol at just under 56% shows slightly with a tug in the nose, but not unpleasantly.
After the first sip, the chocolate increases in smell, hazelnuts can now also be detected. With water, the peppermint and the smoky aspect increases. Light floral notes can now also be detected in the background. The fear components, however, remain in the sherry fruit spectrum.

Taste
Very sweet start, here the PX cask scores fully. Leather and tobacco are now very evident. The blood orange, from the nose, can be tasted as well. The oak comes with spice that could also be associated as smoke. Then dried kitchen herbs, alcohol present, heated and warming. With water even more on the sweet side and the spices become dominant. Still pleasantly warming and full - it can take quite a bit of water.

Finish
Still sweet towards the end, the herbs also continue to play a part in the flavour ensemble. Very slight bitterness, leather and tobacco. In the finish, the alcohol comes again and gives a good push. The finish is rather medium in length, but this is not surprising given the maturation time of 6 years. With water, the finish is somewhat prolonged.

Conclusion
Great drop, if you didn't know, you would never, ever guess NO Scotch here. Despite its youth, there are k a metallic aromas in the smell or taste, no off flavours. Master distiller Andi from Old Raven really knows his craft. A powerhouse. You can play well with water. With a little dilution and time in the glass, it becomes dangerously drinkable. If you like PX, you're in good hands here.

Lagavulin 8y

 

Whiskybase

Der Lagavulin 8 Jahre wurde anlässlich des 200. Jubiläums der Brennerei erstmals als limitierte Abfüllung der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert und ging danach in die Standard Reihe über. Der Malt reifte in amerikanischen und europäischen Refill Eichenfässern und kommt mit einer, gegenüber dem doppelt so alten Lagavulin 16 mit 43%, deutlich höhreren Alkoholstärke von 48% in die Flasche. Wie beim Ardbeg 5y Wee Beastie und der gleichaltrigen erst vor kurzem erschienenen Ardbeg Committee Abfüllung Ardbeg 8 For Discussion finde ich es gut, dass Brennereien sich trauen, eine einstellige Altersangabe auf die Flaschen zu drucken. Wenn der Inhalt gut ist, kann man auch zu dessen Alter stehen. Jetzt muss er nur noch halten, was er verspricht.

Nase & Aussehen
Die Farbe, die der junge Lagavulin ins Glas zaubert, ist eher ein helles Strohgelb - sehr hell. Kraftvoller kalt aschiger Rauch mit leichten Ansätzen zur medizinisch phenolische Geruchsecke. Hinter dem Rauch findet man sich sogleich am Meer wieder, salzig und ein wenig Jod und Seetang. Dazu Fruchtaromen die an eine reife Zitrone mit deren Zeste erinnert.  Mit ein wenig Zeit bekommt die Citrusnote Unterstützung einer Nashi Birne. Ganz zum Schluss hin zeigen sich ein paar Kräuter wie Thymian und wilder Oregano. Eine nette junge Islay-Nase.

Geschmack
Sehr öliges Auftreten und ein kräftiger, fast spritziger Antritt zu Beginn im Mund. Der kaltaschige Rauch ist auch hier sofort im Vordergrund. Eine angenehme Kombination aus einer nicht zu starken Süße zusammen mit der Zitrone und den Gewürzen aus der Nase folgt dem Rauch. Die Meeresassoziation mit Salz und Jod ist ebenfalls weiterhin zu schmecken. Der Alkohol ist sehr gut eingebunden.

Abgang
Gegen Ende zu zeigt sich weiterhin der Rauch und Torf, der auch am längsten im Mund verweilt. Dazu immer noch die Meeresbrise zusammen mit der Schale der Zitrone und den Küchenkräutern. der Abgang, abzüglich des Rauchs und Torfgeschmacks, ist eher mittellang.

Fazit
Ein sehr schöner junger Islay Recke. Ähnlichkeiten mit dem Ardbeg 5y Wee Beastie sind nicht von der Hand zu weisen. Man darf und sollte ihn nicht mit seinen älteren Kollegen vergleichen, dies wäre ihm gegenüber nicht fair. Unvoreingenommen ist der junge Lagavulin eine gute Ergänzung der Standard Range. Wer gerne junge Raucher im Glas hat, macht mit ihm nichts falsch. Ein perfekter Begleiter an einem lauschigen Sommerabend.

The Lagavulin 8 year was first presented to the public as a limited bottling on the occasion of the distillery's 200th anniversary, after which it moved into the standard range. The malt matured in American and European refill oak casks and comes with a, compared to the twice as old Lagavulin 16 with 43%, significantly higher alcohol strength of 48% in the bottle. As with the Ardbeg 5y Wee Beastie and the equally aged Ardbeg Committee bottling Ardbeg 8 For Discussion, which came out just recently, I think it's good that distilleries dare to print a single-digit age statement on the bottles. If the content is good, one can also stand by its age. Now it just has to deliver what it promises.

Nose & Appearance
The color that the young Lagavulin conjures up in the glass is more of a light straw yellow - very pale. Powerful cold ashy smoke with slight hints of the medicinal phenolic smell corner. Behind the smoke you immediately find yourself at the sea, salty and a little iodine and seaweed. In addition, fruit aromas reminiscent of a ripe lemon with its zest.  With a little time, the citrus note gets support of a nashi pear. Towards the very end, a few herbs like thyme and wild oregano show up. A nice young Islay nose. 

Taste
Very oily appearance and a strong, almost tangy attack at the start in the mouth. The cold-ashy smoke is immediately to the fore here as well. A pleasant combination of a not too strong sweetness along with the lemon and spices from the nose follows the smoke. The sea association with salt and iodine can also still be tasted. The alcohol is very well integrated.

Finish
Towards the end, the smoke and peat continue to show up, also lingering the longest in the mouth. In addition, still the sea breeze along with the zest of the lemon and the culinary herbs. the finish, minus the smoke and peat flavor, is rather medium in length.

Conclusion
A very nice young Islay stalwart. Similarities with the Ardbeg 5y Wee Beastie cannot be denied. One must not and should not compare it with its older colleagues, this would not be fair to it. Unbiased, the young Lagavulin is a good addition to the standard range. Who likes to have young smokers in the glass, makes with him nothing wrong. A perfect companion on a cozy summer evening.

Blindtasting No. 5

 

Es war mal wieder Zeit, die sich bei mir angesammelten Blindsamples abzubauen. Challenge accepted! Auf dem Samplefläschchen steht „desde el infierno“ - Aus der Hölle. Na ich bin gespannt.

Nase & Aussehen
Der unbekannte Malt präsentiert sich mit einem dunklen Rotbraun, fast schon Mahagoni. Sehr öliges Aussehen mit langsam hinabgleitende Legs am Glasrand.
Direkt beim Fläschchen gerochen zeigen sich für mich typische Aromen eines Sherryfasses mit dunkles roten Früchten und etwas Fruchtsäure. Es könnte etwas Schwefel dabei sein. Aber es ist keine Sherrybombe der modernen Art, also es scheinen keine nasse Fässer gewesen zu sein. Beim ersten Riechen nach dem Einschenken, sehr schöne Nase voller Aromen. Die Streichhölzer werden intensiver, dahinter jedoch reichlich Pflaumenmus, Rosinen und Tabak. Etwas Ziehen von Alkohol in der Nase. Die leichte Säure von der Frucht ist weiterhin vorhanden, zusammen mit einer angenehmen Süße und Vanille.
Was ich nicht rieche ist Rauch und Torf. Nach dem ersten Verkosten wird der Duft leichter, blumiger. Mit Wasser reduziert sich der Schwefelanteil. Die Früchte werden harmonischer, die Rosinen nehmen zu, die Pflaumensüße geht zurück. So etwas wie reife Aprikosen kommen hinzu.

Geschmack
Sehr cremiges Mundgefühl. Aber der haut beim ersten Versuch ordentlich rein. Sehr süss gleich zu Beginn, wie süßes warmes Powidel, wird jedoch schnell sehr hitzig im Mund. Die Rosinen zeigen sich deutlich sowie Zimt und Ingwer. Und dahinter liegt die gesamte Zeit etwas Schwefel. Der hat ordentlich Alkohol, tendiere zu ordentlich über 55%, vielleicht sogar an die 60%.
Auch beim Geschmack helfen ein paar Tropfen Wasser das Ganze etwas geschmeidiger und runder zu machen. Die Süße und die Hitze nehmen ab. Die Frucht kommt nach vorne.

Abgang
Das Finish geht sehr wärmend und süß weiter. Mit der Zeit etwas Eiche mit sanfter Minze. Die Fruchtaromen wandeln sich nun am Ende hin zu den Schalen von Apfel, Birne und Trauben. Leicht astrigierend ist der Malt vorne im Mund. 

Fazit
Spannende Geschichte. Ich bin hier nicht so empfindlich bzw. hatte auch noch nicht so viele Abfüllungen mit diesem Merkmal. Aber ich würde sagen hier war ein Fass mit ziemlicher Schwefelbearbeitung am Werk. Ich lege mich fest und sage, es ist eine Vollreifung. Und zwar entweder in einem Port oder Sherryfass. Wenn Sherry, dann würde ich auf ein PX tippen. Es war deutliche Süßigkeit oder weniger Gewürze oder Nüsse zu schmecken.
Ist dies ein Schotte? Die intensiven Aromen in der Nase und beim Geschmack, vor allem unverdünnt, haben mich auch an die Solisten von Kavalan erinnert.

Also, was ist meine Vermutung?
Vollreifung, Port oder Sherry (PX). 55-60% Alkoholgehalt. Alter. Hm. Ich würde sagen, 12 bis 15 Jahre. Jünger würde ich nicht tippen, auch nicht älter. Hoher Schwefelanteil, dominiert zeitweise, mundet mir aber trotzdem. Wenn Schottland, dann Speyside oder Highlands. Wenn nicht Schottland, dann kein Ire, und sehr dicht am Schottischem.

Auflösung

It was time again to dismantle the accumulated blind samples with me. Challenge accepted! On the sample bottle is "desde el infierno" - From hell. Well I am curious.

Nose & Appearance
The unknown malt presents with a dark reddish brown, almost mahogany. Very oily appearance with Legs slowly sliding down the rim of the glass. Smelled directly from the bottle, typical aromas of a sherry cask with dark red fruits and some fruit acidity show up for me. There might be some sulfur. But it's not a sherry bomb of the modern kind, so it doesn't seem to have been wet barrels. On first sniff after pouring, very nice nose full of aromas. The matches become more intense, but behind them plenty of plum jam, raisins and tobacco. Some pulling of alcohol on the nose. The slight acidity from the fruit is still present, along with a nice sweetness and vanilla.What I don't smell is smoke and peat. After the first tasting, the aroma becomes lighter, more floral. With water, the sulfur content reduces. The fruit becomes more harmonious, the raisins increase, the plum sweetness decreases. Something like ripe apricots come in.

Taste
Very creamy mouthfeel. But this one packs a punch on the first try. Very sweet right off the bat, like sweet warm powidel, but quickly gets very heated in the mouth. The raisins show up clearly as well as cinnamon and ginger. And there is some sulfur behind it the entire time. This has decent alcohol, leaning towards neat over 55%, maybe even close to 60%.Even with the taste, a few drops of water help make the whole thing a bit smoother and rounder. The sweetness and heat diminish. The fruit comes forward.

Finish
The finish continues very warming and sweet. With time, some oak with gentle mint. The fruit flavors now turn to apple, pear and grape skins at the end. Slightly astriguing, the malt is up front in the mouth.

Conclusion
Exciting story. I'm not that sensitive here and/or haven't had that many bottlings with this characteristic. But I would say here was a cask with quite a bit of sulfur treatment at work. I'll go out on a limb and say it's a full maturation. And it was either in a port or sherry cask. If sherry, then I would guess a PX. There was distinct sweetness or less spice or nuts to taste.Is this a Scotch? The intense aromas on the nose and taste, especially undiluted, also reminded me of Kavalan's soloists.

So, what's my guess?
Full aging, port or sherry (PX). 55-60% alcohol content. Age. Hmm. I'd say 12 to 15 years. I wouldn't guess younger, nor older. High sulfur content, dominates at times, but still tastes good to me. If Scotland, then Speyside or Highlands. If not Scottish, then not Irish, and very close to Scottish.

Mit dem Glenfarclas 15 Jahre führe ich einerseits meine Verkostungsreise durch die diversen Standardserien vor allem der schottischen Brennereien fort. Andererseits ist dies auch die letzte Flasche meines ersten Samplesets (25y, 21y & 15y) von Glenfarclas. Das zweite mit dem 105, 10y und 12y steht schon bereit.

Nase & Aussehen
Farblich ist er seinen älteren Kollegen, dem 21y und 25y nicht unähnlich und zeigt sich mit einem satten Bernsteinton. Eine intensive Kombination aus klassischen Sherryaromen wie dunkle rote aber auch getrockneten Früchten. Auch die für Glenfarclas typischen Orangennoten - durchaus auch mit einer saftigen Fruchtsäure - zusammen mit einer ordentlichen Portion an Honig und Toffee zeigen sich sofort in der Nase. Sehr voll, sogar deutlich intensiver als beim 21y - scheine ein gutes Batch ergattert zu haben. Auch die Eiche zeigt sich mit einer schönen gesetzten Würzigkeit im Hintergrund. Die 46% sind gut eingebunden. 

Geschmack
Der Malt präsentiert sich mit einem leicht cremigen Mundgefühl. Nach einer sehr schönen anfänglichen Süße, wird es rasch prickelnd - wie Brausepulver und Ingwer. Die Fruchtanteile aus der Nase zeigen sich im Geschmack deutlich, wobei es nun eher in Richtung rote reife Äpfel und Orangen geht. Die getrockneten Fruchtanteile aus der Nase sind eher weniger vorhanden. Richtung Abgang finden sich auch Holzeinflüsse vom Eichenfass.

Abgang
Ledrig und auch leichte Tabaknuancen vom Fass schwingen im Finish mit. Halbdunkle Schokolade komplettiert den Abgang. Die leichte bittere Note sowie die aromatische Eiche sind mittel- bis lang im Mundraum zu schmecken.

Fazit
Überraschend volle Sherrynase - ohne den eigenen Glenfarclas-Style zu vermissen - der höhere Alkoholgehalt von 46% anstatt den sonst bei der Standard Range verwendeten 40% bzw. 43% machen sich positiv bemerkbar. Sehr schöne Standardabfüllung. Auch im Geschmack und Finish gefällt er mir gut. Gefährlich süffig und man kann sich mit ihm auch intensiver auseinander setzen. Für den aktuellen Preis eine durchaus empfehlenswerte Standardabfülllung.

With the Glenfarclas 15years, on the one hand, I continue my tasting journey through the various standard series of mainly Scottish distilleries. On the other hand, this is also the last bottle of my first sample set (25y, 21y & 15y) of Glenfarclas. The second one with the 105, 10y and 12y is already ready.

Nose & Appearance
Color-wise, it is not dissimilar to its older colleagues, the 21y and 25y, showing a rich amber hue. An intense combination of classic sherry aromas like dark red but also dried fruits. Also, the orange notes typical of Glenfarclas - definitely also with a juicy fruit acidity - together with a good portion of honey and toffee show up immediately in the nose. Very full, even significantly more intense than the 21y - seem to have got hold of a good batch. The oak also shows up with a nice set spiciness in the background. The 46% is well integrated. 

Taste
The malt presents with a slightly creamy mouthfeel. After a very nice initial sweetness, it quickly becomes tingly - like sherbet and ginger. The fruit components from the nose show up clearly on the palate, though now it's more along the lines of red ripe apples and oranges. The dried fruit components from the nose are rather less present. Towards the finish, wood influences from the oak barrel can also be found.

Finish
Leathery and also light tobacco nuances from the barrel resonate on the finish. Semi-dark chocolate completes the finish. The slight bitter note as well as the aromatic oak can be tasted medium to long in the mouth.

Conclusion
Surprisingly full sherry nose - without missing Glenfarclas' own style - the higher alcohol content of 46% instead of the 40% and 43% usually used in the Standard Range make a positive impact. Very nice standard bottling. I also like the taste and finish. Dangerously drinkable and you can also deal with it more intensively. For the current price, a thoroughly recommendable standard bottling.
