Caol Ila Distillers Edition

Diageo bringt seit 1997 die Distillers Edition (DE) Serie auf den Markt. Eine der Brennereien, die seit damals immer dabei war, ist Caol Ila. Dabei bekommt die zwölfjährige Standardabfüllung immer ein - man munkelt von sechs Monaten - Finish in ausgekohlten ehemaligen Moscatelfässern. Bis 2021 hatten die Distillers Edition Abfüllungen eine Altersangabe - beim Caol Ila war dies 12 Jahre. Dies ist seit 2022 weggefallen, seit dem sind es nur noch NAS-Abfüllungen, das Alter ist nicht mehr bekannt. 

Überraschenderweise ist bei der diesjährigen Serie keine Distillers Edition von Caol Ila mehr dabei. Über die Gründe zu dieser Entscheidung lässt sich nur spekulieren für was Diageo sich die Fässer aufspart. Eventuell gibt es von der 2022iger (der ersten NAS-Abfüllung) noch genug Flaschen am Markt.

Ich habe ein Sample der 2019er Version der Edition im Glas. Wie immer hat sie 43%, ist gefärbt und kühlgefiltert.

Aussehen
Gold, dunkles Gelb

Nase
Es steigt ein angenehmer weicher Rauch nach Steinkohle mit Spuren von Asche und einem mineralischen Touch in die Nase, der Rauch kommt mir im Vergleich zum normalen 12er weniger intensiv vor. Hinter dem Rauch findet sich ein noch warmer honigsüßer Zitronenkuchen mit gegrillten Stücken einer Ananas als Topping. Nach ein paar Minuten im Glas gesellen sich ein paar Aprikosen mit Vanillezucker besteubt und überreife grüne Trauben, die bereits gelb und weich werden, zum Kuchen hinzu. 

Auch ein paar getrocknete Kräuter und maritime salzige, jodige Aromen erscheinen auf der nasalen Bildfläche. Den Alkohol merkt man überhaupt nicht. Insgesamt wirkt die Nase im Gegensatz zum normalen 12y weicher und süßer. Man könnte auch sagen, dass die Aromen mehr abgeschliffener wirken - eleganter vielleicht.

Geschmack
Ein weiches öliges Mundgefühl mit einem schönen rauchig, kaltaschigen Antritt. Der Rauch ist im Geschmack mehr präsent, als im Geruch. Dann folgt der Honig mit einer ordentlichen Süße. Die Zitrone mit der gegrillten Ananas und dem Traubensaft stehen für die fruchtige Seite. Im Mittelteil übernehmen die getrockneten Kräuter zusammen mit dem Rauch und etwas Jod und Salz wieder die Führung im Geschmack. Es wird würziger und auch mehr adstringierend. Trotz der „nur“ 43% Alkoholstärke passt die Intensität am Gaumen sehr gut. Der Whisky wirkt nicht zu schwach und bringt die Aromen sehr gut voran. 

Abgang
Das Holz vom Fass wird in Richtung Ende hinaus deutlich präsenter - leicht bittere Aromen von der Haut der Trauben und der Kerne. Die kalte Asche und der Rauch vom Lagerfeuer sind weiterhin allgegenwärtig und kleiden den Mundraum lange aus.

Fazit
Schön einmal so einen Klassiker im Glas gehabt zu haben. Die zusätzliche Nachreifung in den behandelten Moscatelfässern hat den intensiven Rauch des 12jährigen vor allem in der Nase abgeschwächt und mehr Süße und Fruchtanteile gebracht. Insgesamt wirkt er weicher und eleganter - ein Gaumenschmeichler. Die 43% funktionieren gut und wirken nie lasch oder langweilig. Bisher hatte ich noch keine Distillers Edition Abfüllung, die mir nicht gefallen hat - jedoch hatte ich die neuen NAS-Version noch nicht im Glas.

Diageo has been launching the Distillers Edition (DE) series since 1997. One of the distilleries that has always been part of it since then is Caol Ila. The twelve-year standard bottling is always given a finish - rumour has it six months - in charred former Moscato casks. Until 2021, the Distillers Edition bottlings had an age statement - for Caol Ila, this was 12 years. This has been dropped since 2022, since then they are only NAS bottlings, the age is no longer known. 

Surprisingly, this year's series no longer includes a Distillers Edition of Caol Ila. We can only speculate about the reasons for this decision and what Diageo is saving the casks for. Perhaps there are still enough bottles of the 2022 (the first NAS bottling) on the market.

I have a sample of the 2019 version of the edition in my glass. As always, it's 43%, coloured and chill-filtered.

Appearance
Gold, dark yellow

Nose
A pleasant soft smoke of coal with traces of ash and a mineral touch rises to the nose, the smoke seems less intense to me compared to the regular 12y. Behind the smoke there is a still warm honey-sweet lemon cake with grilled pieces of a pineapple as topping. After a few minutes in the glass, a few apricots dusted with vanilla sugar and overripe green grapes, already turning yellow and soft, join the cake. 

A few dried herbs and maritime salty, iodine-like aromas also appear on the nasal screen. You don't notice the alcohol at all. Overall, the nose seems softer and sweeter in contrast to the regular 12y. You could also say that the flavours seem more polished - perhaps more elegant.

Taste
A soft oily mouthfeel with a nice smoky, cold-ashy entry. The smoke is more present in the taste than in the smell. This is followed by the honey with a decent sweetness. The lemon with the grilled pineapple and grape juice represent the fruity side. In the middle part, the dried herbs together with the smoke and some iodine and salt take the lead in the taste again. It becomes spicier and also more astringent. Despite the "only" 43% alcohol strength, the intensity on the palate fits very well. The whisky does not seem too weak and brings the flavours forward very well. 

Finish
The wood from the cask becomes much more present towards the end - slightly bitter flavours from the skin of the grapes and the seeds. The cold ash and smoke from the campfire continue to be omnipresent and line the mouth for a long time.

Conclusion
Nice to have had such a classic in the glass for once. The additional maturation in the treated Moscato casks has softened the intense smoke of the 12 year old, especially on the nose, and brought more sweetness and fruit components. Overall it seems softer and more elegant - a palate pleaser. The 43% works well and never seems feeble or boring. So far, I haven't had a Distillers Edition bottling that I didn't like - however, I haven't had the new NAS version in my glass yet.

In Großbritannien wird nicht nur in Schottland Whisky gebrannt. Auch in England und in Wales wird das Wasser des Lebens gewonnen. In Wales ist es die Penderyn Brennerei, die 2004 gegründet, die erste Destillerie seit dem 19. Jahrhundert ist, die Whisky produziert. 

Grund genug, diesem weißen Fleck auf meiner Whiskylandkarte etwas Farbe zukommen zu lassen. Zu diesem Zweck nahm ich mir aus meiner umfangreichen Samplesammlung ein Fläschchen aus der A Dream of Wales - Fairytale Series vom Brühler Whiskyhaus. Marco Bonn hat bereits einige Abfüllungen aus Wales herausgebracht.

Die meines Wissens letzte Abfüllung stammt aus 2022 und lag reifte sieben Jahre lang zuerst in Ex-Bourbonfässern und bekam danach für eine nicht bekannte Zeitdauer ein Finish in Palo Cortado Sherryfässern. Insgesamt wurden 307 Flaschen ungefärbt und ungefiltert mit 59,2% Alkohol abgefüllt. 

Aussehen
Helles Kupfergold

Nase
Der Alkoholgehalt von über 59% macht sich anfänglich durch eine deutliche Schärfe im Geruch bemerkbar. Auch die relativ kurze Reifezeit ist durch eine jugendlich, metallische Note zu erkennen. Unverdünnt benötigt der Whisky Zeit, bis sich die Alkoholschwaden etwas verflüchtigen. Danach wartet er aber mit einer gehörigen Portion an süßem Blütenhonig auf. Zusätzlich wird es nun richtig fruchtbetont. Da hätten wir sehr reife saftige gelbe und rote Birnen, eine Mischung aus gelben und roten Weintrauben, Honigmelonen sowie, wenn auch nur dezent, dunkle getrocknete Früchte. Durch den Alkohol ist die ganze Zeit ein nicht unangenehmer After Eight Effekt präsent - frische Minze mit dunkler Schokolade umrandet. Ein paar getrocknete und gerebelte Kräuter runden den Geruch ab.

Die Nase verträgt durchaus den einen oder anderen Tropfen Wasser! Die Schärfe vom Alkohol aber auch die metallische Jugend reduzieren sich damit deutlich. Der Malt wird viel weicher und die süßen, fruchtigen Aromen kommen noch viel besser zur Geltung - nun auch mit einer schönen Vanillenote. Gefällt mir mit Wasser wesentlich besser.

Geschmack
Sehr süß mit Karamell und Honig, Pflaumen, reife Trauben, durch den Alkohol kräftiger Antritt im Mund, aber nicht so brachial, wie befürchtet. Dunkle Schokolade mit Pfefferminz, wieder die getrockneten Kräuter.

Mit Wasserzugabe wird er gleich von Beginn an sehr süß und extrem fruchtig. Es folgt darauf zwar auch eine spürbare scharfe Pfeffernote, die ist jedoch durch die Kräuternoten sehr aromatisch und bietet zur anfänglichen starken Süße einen guten Kontrapunkt.

Abgang
Es verbleiben die Kräuter, nun vermischt mit etwas Honig. Hinten raus wird es etwas trockener und bitter. Ganz zum Schluss kommen nochmals Pflaumen und Trauben zum Vorschein. Interessant. Auch das Finish gestaltet sich mit Wasser harmonischer und auch langlebiger.

Fazit
Ein paar Jahre länger im Fass und dafür ein paar Prozentpunkte weniger an Alkohol hätten dem jungen Waliser meiner Meinung nach sehr gut getan. Unverdünnt kann er für mich sein durchaus vorhandenes Potential nur teilweise ausspielen. Mit Wasser wird er sehr süß, fruchtig und süffig. Es muss ja nicht immer Cask Strength sein. Insgesamt eine interessante Annäherung an die waliser Brennereikunst. Ein Blick über die schottischen Grenzen lohnt sich doch.

In the UK, whisky is not only distilled in Scotland. The water of life is also extracted in England and in Wales. In Wales, it is the Penderyn distillery, founded in 2004, that is the first distillery since the 19th century to produce whisky. 

Reason enough to add some colour to this blank spot on my whisky map. To this end, I took a bottle from the A Dream of Wales - Fairytale Series from Brühler Whiskyhaus from my extensive sample collection. Marco Bonn has already released several bottlings from Wales.

As far as I know, the latest bottling dates from 2022 and was first matured for seven years in ex-bourbon casks and then finished for an unknown length of time in Palo Cortado sherry casks. A total of 307 bottles were bottled uncoloured and unfiltered at 59.2% alcohol.

Appearance
Light copper gold

Nose
The alcohol content of over 59% is initially noticeable through a distinct sharpness in the smell. The relatively short maturation period can also be detected by a youthful, metallic note. Undiluted, the whisky needs time for the alcohol to dissipate. After that, however, it comes up with a good portion of sweet blossom honey. In addition, it now becomes really fruity. There are very ripe, juicy yellow and red pears, a mixture of yellow and red grapes, honeydew melons and, even if only subtly, dark dried fruits. Due to the alcohol, a not unpleasant after eight effect is present all the time - fresh mint edged with dark chocolate. A few dried and rubbed herbs round off the smell.

The nose can definitely take a drop or two of water! The sharpness from the alcohol but also the metallic youth are clearly reduced with it. The malt becomes much softer and the sweet, fruity aromas come to the fore much better - now also with a nice vanilla note. I like it much better with water.

Taste
Very sweet with caramel and honey, plums, ripe grapes, powerful start in the mouth due to the alcohol, but not as brute as I feared. Dark chocolate with peppermint, again the dried herbs.

With the addition of water, it becomes very sweet and extremely fruity right from the start. It is followed by a noticeable hot pepper note, but this is very aromatic due to the herbal notes and offers a good counterpoint to the initial strong sweetness.

Finish
The herbs remain, now mixed with a little honey. At the end it becomes a little drier and bitter. At the very end, plums and grapes appear again. Interesting. The finish is also more harmonious and long-lasting with water.

Conclusion
A few years longer in the cask and a few percentage of alcohol less would have done this young Welshman a lot of good in my opinion. Undiluted, it can only partly show its potential. With water, it becomes very sweet, fruity and drinkable. It doesn't always have to be Cask Strength. All in all, an interesting introduction to the art of Welsh distilling. A look across the Scottish borders is worthwhile after all.

Tomatin 15y American Oak

2016 brachte Tomatin im Rahmen ihres Travel Retail Exclusive Programm den Tomatin 15y American Oak auf den Markt. Trotz exklusiver Vertriebssparte war diese Flasche, wie die meisten Abfüllungen die irgendwann nur für den Travel Retail Markt gedacht waren, auch im normalen stationären und Online-Handel erhältlich.

Dieser Whisky reifte fünfzehn Jahre in Ex-Bourbon Fässern aus Nordamerikanischer Eiche. Abgefüllt wurde mit 46%. Leider gibt es keine Informationen auf der Flasche, der Verpackung oder im Internet dazu zu finden, ob gefärbt und kühlgefiltert wurde, daher gehe ich zumindest von einer künstlichen Farbgebung aus.

Aussehen
Gelbgold.

Nase
Eine feine aromatische Nase einer klassischen Bourbonfassreifung. Es beginnt mit saftigen reifen gelben und grünen Äpfeln, knackigen Nashi Birnen, säuerlichen Stachelbeeren und sizilianischen Zitronen. Hinter dem Obstkorb wird es malzig und cremig, warmes helles Kuchengebäck mit viel Bourbon Vanille und Butter sowie einem Löffel hellem Blütenhonig. Mit der Zeit bekommen die Fruchtaromen Verstärkung durch den Saft von hellen Trauben, die zusätzlich eine säuerliche Note mitbringen. Der Kuchen bekommt eine Glasur aus Milchschokolade mit leicht gerösteten Haselnüssen. Man merkt die 15 Jahre Reifung, die Nase ist nicht jung und prickelnd sondern hat bereits eine gewisse Schwere ohne an Frische verloren zu haben. Der Alkohol ist super eingebunden, kein Stechen oder ähnliches stört den Genuss.

Geschmack
Ein cremiger, butterweicher Beginn. Eine angenehme Süße, mehr in Richtung Staubzucker als Honig, füllt anfänglich den Mundraum komplett aus. Wieder dieser helle Kuchen mit viel Vanille im Teig. Dazu warmes Apfel- und Birnenkompott. Danach setzt eine mittelstarke Würzigkeit mit einer Spur von Muskat und Nelken ein, unterstützt durch etwas weißem Pfeffer. Die Süße und die Gebäckassoziationen bleiben jedoch weiterhin im Hintergrund präsent. Die 46% sind im Mund mehr als in der Nase zu spüren, sind aber immer noch sehr gut integriert. Überhaupt gestaltet sich der Geschmack sehr ausgewogen und fein.

Abgang
Weiterhin deutliche Vanille und süßes cremiges Karamell. Auch die Fruchtaromen sind immer noch da. Eine ganz leichte Minznote zuckt hervor. Es wird etwas adstringierend vorne und seitlich im Mundraum. Der Holzeinfluss der Fässer zeigt sich nun etwas durch mehr Bitterstoffe. Aber es übersteigt eine mitteldunkle Schokolade oder einen kleinen Cortado kaum. Ein mittellanges Finish.

Fazit
Die Kombination Tomatin und Reifung im Bourbonfass funktioniert sehr gut, wie ich bereits beim 21y bemerkt habe. Die Nase ist fein und die Aromen vom Fass kommen deutlich zu Tage. Fruchtig mit viel Vanille. Im Geschmack erkennt man die 15 Jahre deutlicher. Die Würzigkeit ab der Mitte ist gut, denn sie harmoniert gut mit den weichen cremig süßen Aromen. Mir gefällt diese Abfüllung.

In 2016, Tomatin launched the Tomatin 15y American Oak as part of their Travel Retail Exclusive programme. Despite exclusive distribution, this bottle, like most bottlings that were at some point only intended for the travel retail market, was also available in the normal stationary and online trade.

This whisky was matured for fifteen years in ex-bourbon casks made of North American oak. It was bottled at 46%. Unfortunately, there is no information on the bottle, the packaging or on the internet about whether it was coloured and chill-filtered, so I assume at least that it was coloured.

Appearance
Yellow gold.

Nose
A fine aromatic nose of a classic bourbon cask maturation. It starts with juicy ripe yellow and green apples, crisp nashi pears, sour gooseberries and Sicilian lemons. Beyond the fruit basket, it becomes malty and creamy, warm light cake pastry with lots of bourbon vanilla and butter and a spoonful of light floral honey. Over time, the fruit flavours get a boost from the juice of pale grapes, which bring an additional sour note. The cake gets a milk chocolate glaze with lightly roasted hazelnuts. You notice the 15 years of ageing, the nose is not young and sparkling but already has a certain richness without having lost freshness. The alcohol is well integrated, no stinging or anything like that disturbs the enjoyment.

Taste
A creamy, buttery start. A pleasant sweetness, more in the direction of powdered sugar than honey, initially fills the mouth completely. Again this cake with lots of vanilla in the dough. This is joined by warm apple and pear compote. Then a medium spiciness sets in with a hint of nutmeg and cloves, supported by some white pepper. However, the sweetness and pastry associations remain present in the background. The 46% is more noticeable in the mouth than in the nose, but is still very well integrated. In general, the taste is very balanced and fine.

Finish
Still clear vanilla and sweet creamy caramel. The fruit flavours are also still to be found. A very subtle note of mint twitches out. It gets a little astringent front and side of the mouth. The wood influence of the barrels now shows up a little with more bitterness. But it hardly exceeds a medium dark chocolate or a small cortado. A medium-long finish.

Conclusion
The combination of Tomatin and maturation in bourbon casks works very well, as I already noticed with the 21y. The nose is fine and the aromas from the cask come through clearly. Fruity with lots of vanilla. In the taste, you can recognise the 15 years more clearly. The spiciness from the middle is good, as it harmonises well with the soft creamy sweet flavours. I like this bottling.

Secret Orkney 2009 14y - Spirits of the Forest VIII (whic)

Wie schon beim Secret Speyside von letzter Woche ist das "Secret" bei diesem Secret Orkney kein wirkliches Geheimnis. Denn auch bei dieser Abfüllung beginnt die Fassnummer mit "DRU" und somit ist klar, dass das Fass von der Edrington Group stammt. Und da der Konzern Eigentümer der Highland Park Brennerei auf Orkney ist (die zweite auf der Insel befindliche Brennerei wäre Scapa), ist das Geheimnis sehr rasch gelüftet.

Also haben wir hier einen 14 Jahre alten Highland Park im Glas, der in einem Bourbon Hogshead reifen durfte. 411 Flaschen wurden ohne Farbzugabe und Kühlfiltration mit einer guten Trinkstärke von 47% abgefüllt. 

Aussehen
Strohgelb 

Nase
Ein sehr frischer, würzig kräftiger Einstieg. Neben gerebelten Kräutern wie Thymian, Salbei und Oregano ist die für HP typische Heidekrautnote auch präsent, aber nicht so ausgeprägt, wie ich es bei anderen Vertretern dieser Orkney Brennerei bereits hatte. Hinzu gesellt sich ein nicht sehr stark ausgeprägter Geruch nach Lagerfeuer, dass bereits am ausgehen ist. Neben dieser würzigen Seite sind vor allem intensive Zitrusfruchtnoten dominant. Hatte ich schon lange nicht mehr in dieser Ausprägung - nett. Zitronen zusammen mit einer Süße die an Zitronenzuckerln erinnern, ebenso Limetten und deren abgeriebene Schale. Auch reife Ananas ist im Obstkorb enthalten. Mit mehr Zeit und Luft im Glas gesellen sich weitere mineralische, leicht maritim anmutende Eindrücke hinzu. In der Nase ist immer wieder ein Pritzeln zu merken, eine zarte Schärfe, nicht unangenehm - unterstreicht den frischen Grundcharakter des Whiskys. Wenn man den Rauch mal außen vor lässt, hat der Malt durchaus seine Ähnlichkeiten mit einem Islay Vertreter wie zb. einem Ardbeg 10y oder einem unpeated Caol Ila. 

Geschmack
Ein kräftiger Antritt mit einer schönen süßen Anfangsphase, etwas Karamell aus Honig zeigt sich. Der Rauch bzw. die Asche vom Feuer ist nun stärker präsent. Die Gewürze, die getrockneten Kräuter aus der Nase gewinnen rasch die Oberhand. Jedoch ist auch weiterhin die Zitrone mit abgeriebener leicht herber Schale Teil des Gesamtbildes. Zur würzigen Dominanz trägt auch die frische Pfeffernote bei. Auch der mineralische, leicht maritime Touch mit einer Assoziation nach Meeressalz und -Prise ist zugegen. 

Abgang
Zum Ende hin kommen Stücke bitterer Schokolade zum Vorschein. Immer noch etwas Asche und die in der Glut verglimmten Kräuterstengel sind deutlich zu schmecken. Es wird nun, vor allem innen an der Lippe etwas trocken, adstringierend. Das Finish ist durchaus mittel bis lang.

Fazit
Das Fass hat dem Spirit viel Raum für seine Entfaltung gegeben. Was mir gefällt. Die Nase ist sehr frisch und fruchtig mit einer gefälligen Kräuternote, in der auch das typische Heidekraut mitschwingt. Im Mund ist er würziger und der Rauch ist intensiver.

Ich kann in diesem Secret Orkney den jungen Whitlaw, der mir damals recht gut gefallen hat, durchaus erkennen. Obwohl die Aromen insgesamt gesetzter sind, ist sein Grundcharakter ein frisch fruchtiger. 14 Jahre Reifezeit hätte ich ihm blind zwar nicht zugetraut, aber es stört auch nicht. Ein wirklich süffig leckerer Whisky. Highland Park funktioniert auch ohne Sherryfass ganz gut.

As with last week's Secret Speyside, the "Secret" in this Secret Orkney is not really a secret. Because also in this bottling the cask number starts with "DRU" and thus it is clear that the cask comes from the Edrington Group. And because the group owns the Highland Park distillery on Orkney (the second distillery located on the island is Scapa), the secret is very quickly revealed.

So here we have a 14-year-old Highland Park in the glass, which was allowed to mature in a bourbon hogshead. 411 bottles were bottled without colour addition and chill filtration at a good drinking strength of 47%.

Appearance
Straw yellow 

Nose
A very fresh, spicy, vibrant entry. Besides rubbed herbs like thyme, sage and oregano, the typical HP heather note is also present, but not as prominent as I have had with other samples from this Orkney distillery. In addition, there is a not very strongly noticeable smell of campfire, which is already going out. Besides this spicy side, intense citrus notes are dominant. I haven't had this for a long time - nice. Lemons together with a sweetness reminiscent of lemon drops, as well as limes and their grated peel. Ripe pineapple is also in the fruit basket. With more time and air in the glass, more mineral, slightly maritime impressions join in. In the nose, there is always a tingle, a delicate spiciness, not unpleasant - underlines the fresh basic character of the whisky. If you leave out the smoke, the malt has its similarities with an Islay representative like an Ardbeg 10y or an unpeated Caol Ila. 

Taste
A good start with a nice sweet beginning, some caramel from honey shows up. The smoke or ash from the fire is now more present. The spices, the dried herbs from the nose quickly gain the upper hand. However, the lemon with its grated, slightly tart peel is still part of the overall picture. The fresh pepper note also contributes to the spicy dominance. The mineral, slightly maritime touch with an association of sea salt and pinch is also evident. 

Finish
Chunks of bitter chocolate emerge towards the end. Still some ash and the stalks of herbs smouldering in the embers can be clearly tasted. It's getting a bit astringent now, especially on the inside of the lips, a bit dry. The finish is definitely medium to long.

Conclusion
The cask has given the spirit plenty of room to develop. What I like. The nose is very fresh and fruity with a pleasing herbal note that also includes the typical heather note. In the mouth it is spicier and the smoke is more intense.

I can definitely recognise the young Whitlaw in this Secret Orkney, which I quite liked at the time. Although the flavours are more balanced overall, its basic character is fresh and fruity. I wouldn't have thought it had 14 years of maturation, but it doesn't bother me either. A really delicious whisky. Highland Park works quite well without a sherry cask.

Nase
Anfänglich etwas verhalten und leicht. Außer einer guten Portion Karamell und Vanille kommt zu Beginn nicht viel aus dem Glas. Der 15y Bruder war hier deutlich kraftvoller und spendabler mit seinen Aromen. Nach ein paar Minuten Standzeit öffnet sich die Nase mehr. Die Vanille wird feiner, nicht mehr so künstlich, jetzt ist es mehr der Duft einer geöffneten Bourbon Vanilleschote. Milchschokolade mit weichem Toffee, Creme Brûlèe mit gebranntem Karamell. Im Hintergrund erkennt man eine leichte Fruchtnote, wie getrocknete Stücke von Mango und Papaya.

Geschmack
Süßer, jedoch gottseidank nicht zu süßer, Antritt mit cremigem Mundgefühl. Creme Brûlée mit viel Vanille und Milchschokolade. Leichte Noten von Zimt und Muskatnuss mit etwas Holzwürze, aber nur sehr dezent im Hintergrund. Die Schokolade bekommt beim zweiten Schluck mehr Kakaoanteil und eine Füllung von Kokosnuss, ähnlich einem Bounty. Die Frucht wandelt sich mehr in Richtung Orange und frischer Mango, spielt aber weiterhin nur die zweite Geige im Geschmack.

Abgang
Die leicht würzigen und bitteren Aspekte vom Holz nehmen etwas zu. Es bleibt aber weiterhin ein sehr weiches und ausgewogenes Aromenspiel. Die Bounty Assoziation ist wieder da. Das Finish ist insgesamt aber eher von kurzer Dauer.

Fazit
Wie schon die beiden jüngeren Abfüllungen ist auch der 20y Vertreter von Malteco mehr etwas für Einsteiger oder für Genießer von eher leichten weichen Rums. Die fünf Jahre mehr an Reifung gegenüber dem 15y erkennt man an einem höheren Grad an Ausgewogenheit. Jedoch hatte der jüngere Bruder ein volleres Aromenspiel. Der 20jährige benötigt etwas Anlaufzeit. Positiv ist, dass er doch weniger süß ist, dies kommt ihm bzw. meinem Geschmacksprofil zu Gute. Ein angenehmer Rum, der nicht zu viel Aufmerksamkeit benötigt, aber sehr süffig ist.

Appearance
Amber.

Nose
Initially a little reserved and light. Apart from a good portion of caramel and vanilla, not much comes out of the glass at the beginning. The 15y brother was much more powerful and generous with its aromas. After few minutes, the nose opens up more. The vanilla becomes more delicate, no longer so synthetic, now it's more the aroma of an opened bourbon vanilla bean. Milk chocolate with soft toffee, crème brûlée with burnt caramel. In the background you can detect a slight fruity note, like dried pieces of mango and papaya.

Taste
Sweet, but thankfully not too sweet, start with a creamy mouthfeel. Creme brûlée with lots of vanilla and milk chocolate. Light notes of cinnamon and nutmeg with some wood spice, but only very subtle in the background. The chocolate gets more cocoa percentage at the second sip and a filling of coconut, similar to a Bounty. The fruit turns more towards orange and fresh mango, but continues to play second fiddle to the flavour.

Finish
The slightly spicy and bitter aspects from the wood increase a little. But it remains a very soft and balanced flavour play. The Bounty association is there again. The finish is rather short-lived overall.

Conclusion
Like the two younger bottlings, the 20y representative of Malteco is more something for beginners or for fans of rather light soft rums. The five more years of maturation compared to the 15y can be recognised by a higher degree of balance. However, the younger brother had a richer aroma. The 20 year old needs some time to mature. On the positive side, it is less sweet, which benefits it and my taste profile. A pleasant rum that doesn't need too much attention, but is very drinkable.
