Bei meinem Rum-Händler, dem Rumzentrum in Baden bei Wien, suchte ich nach einer geeigneten Flasche für einen zarten und leichten Einstieg in die Welt des Jamaikanischen Rums. Es ging mir vor allem um das erste Eintauchen in die bekannten Ester-Aromen. Ich entschied mich für den Mezan 2007 12y mit 46%. 

Dieser unabhängig abgefüllte Rum reifte fünf Jahre in Jamaica bevor er weitere sieben Jahre in Europa lagerte. Die gesamte Zeit lag er in Ex-Bourbon-Fässern. Mezan verwendet keinen Farbstoff, keine Kühlfiltration und vor allem, es wird nie mit nachträglicher Zuckerbeigabe gearbeitet. 

Der verwendete Rum kommt aus der Monymusk bzw. Clarendon Brennerei. Es ist ein Blend von Destillaten aus hochmodernen Collum-Stills und den fast schon antiken Pot Stills der Brennerei.

Aussehen
Strohgelb.

Nase
Eine sehr frische zum Reinschnuppern einladende Nase. Am Anfang überwiegen die Fruchtaromen. Es finden sich mittelreife Bananen, Ananas, ordentlich Zitrone und Limetten. Die Esternoten sind vorhanden, sind aber nicht so ausgeprägt und prägnant, wie ich bei zwölf Jahren Reifezeit erwartet hätte. Der bekannt, berüchtigte Jamaika Funk, mit seinen Hochester Aromen, die sich oft zu Düften nach Autoreifen, Petrol Öl, Maschinenöl und ähnliches steigern, sind hier nicht zu finden. Dafür eine feine Eukalyptus/Minz-Note mit Spuren von grünem Gras und Wiese. Der Alkohol kitzelt immer wieder etwas in der Nase und sorgt so für ein angenehmes Prickeln.

Geschmack
Gutes Mundgefühl, starker Antritt. Nicht allzu komplex, was man in der Nase riecht, hat man auch im Geschmack. Der Ester-Funk ist deutlicher als im Geruch, aber für Jamaika-Verhältnisse bleibt es immer noch auf der dezenten Seite. Es dominieren weiterhin die hell fruchtigen Aromen nach Banane, der Ananas und der Zitrone. Vanille begleitet mit einer ordentlichen Portion an Pfefferminzbonbons den Obstkorb. Unterstützt werden all jene Geschmäcker von einer überraschend intensiven Süße, die ich so in der Nase nicht wahrgenommen habe. Ab dem Mittelteil wird es würziger, und erinnert an weißen Pfeffer oder Ingwer.

Abgang
Recht lange schmeckt man noch das Pfefferminzbonbon, die Ananas sowie einiges vom Holz. Vanille und noch Spuren der Süße begleiten das mittellange Finish.

Fazit
Ich wollte einen ersten Schritt in die Ester- und Funk-Welt von Jamaika gehen und dies gelingt mit diesem Rum recht gut. Er zeigt sehr schön die Möglichkeiten, was sich hinter dieser Aromen- und Geschmackstüre verbirgt ohne einem jemals zu überfordern. Darum gefällt er mir auch recht gut. Die Aromen lassen sich sehr gut aufdröseln. Ein guter Einstieg in die Rumwelt von Jamaika. Sicherlich weniger geeignet für bereits erfahrene Rumtrinker und Jamaika-Liebhaber. Die bezeichnen ihn wahrscheinlich als zu mild und zu rund, was den Estergehalt angeht.

At my rum retailer, the Rumzentrum in Baden near Vienna, I was looking for a suitable bottle for a gentle and easy introduction to the world of Jamaican rum. I was mainly interested in a first experience of the well-known ester flavours. I chose the Mezan 2007 12y at 46%. 

This independently bottled rum was aged for five years in Jamaica before spending a further seven years in Europe. It spent the entire time in ex-bourbon casks. Mezan uses no colouring, no chill filtration and, above all, never adds sugar. 

The rum used comes from the Monymusk and Clarendon distillery. It is a blend of distillates from ultra-modern column stills and the distillery's almost antique pot stills.

Appearance
Straw yellow in colour.

Nose
Very fresh and inviting nose. Fruity aromas dominate at first. Medium ripe banana, pineapple, lots of lemon and lime. The estery notes are present, but not as pronounced and concise as I would have expected after twelve years of ageing. The notorious Jamaican funk with its high ester notes, which often develop into the smell of car tyres, petrol, engine oil and the like, is not to be found here. Instead there is a fine eucalyptus/mint note with traces of green grass and meadow. The alcohol tickles the nose a little and gives a pleasant tingling feeling.

Palate
Good mouthfeel, strong in the mouth. Not overly complex, what you smell on the nose is what you get on the palate. The ester funk is more prominent than on the nose, but still subtle by Jamaican standards. The bright fruity flavours of banana, pineapple and lemon continue to dominate. Vanilla accompanies the fruit basket with a good portion of peppermint candy. All these flavours are supported by a surprisingly intense sweetness that I did not detect on the nose. From the middle, the palate becomes spicier, reminiscent of white pepper or ginger.

Finish
The peppermint candy, pineapple and some of the wood are still present for a long time. Vanilla and traces of sweetness accompany the medium-long finish.

Conclusion
I wanted to take a first step into the ester and funk world of Jamaica and this rum does that quite well. It shows the possibilities that lie behind this door of flavours and aromas very nicely, without ever overwhelming you. That's why I like it so much. You can separate the flavours very well. A good introduction to the world of Jamaican rum. Certainly less suitable for experienced rum drinkers and Jamaica lovers. They would probably find it too mild and too round in terms of ester profile.

Marco Bonn und das Brühler Whiskyhaus haben mit A Dream of Scotland und The Fine Art of Whisky nicht nur erfolgreiche Single Malt Reihen am Start, sondern mit Rumbastic auch eine eigene Marke für fassstarke Rum-Abfüllungen. Bis dato hatte ich noch keine Rumbastic Abfüllung im Glas. Dies ändert sich jetzt. Ich bin zwar kein wirklicher Fan von Jamaika Rums, jedoch konnte ich diesem Gesamtpaket, einem Worthy Park mit beachtlichen 15 Jahren Reifedauer in einem Mocatel Cask nicht widerstehen.

Wie immer beim Brühler Whiskyhaus wurde auch hier weder nachgefärbt noch nachgezuckert. Der Alkoholgehalt mit 55,3% verspricht einiges in Sachen Aromenspiel und -power.

Nase
Das Moscatelfass hat ganze Arbeit geleistet. Wie Sirup liegt die Süße der Trauben über dem Glas. Wuchtige Aromen von Muskatnuss, Rumrosinen, eingekochten Marillen- und Pflaumenröster sowie halbtrockene Feigen. Vom eigentlichen Jamaikaner ist erst nach einiger Zeit und dies auch eher im Hintergrund etwas zu riechen. Vor allem reife Bananen und Vanille sind auszumachen. Für Fans des typischen Jamaika Funks ist hier wenig übrig geblieben. Der Alkohol beruhigt sich nach ein paar Minuten im Glas und sorgt danach für einen optimalen Untergrund für die Aromenfracht.

Geschmack
Extrem cremig und wirklich wie ein dickflüssiger Sirup gleitet die Spirituose in den Mundraum. Karamell und Honig in Kombination sorgen für einen sehr süßen Start, der rasch durch den Alkohol eine spritzige, leicht scharfe Anekdote erhält. Danach folgen die aus der Nase bekannten Noten von Rosinen, Trockenaprikosen, Feigen, Pflaumen und viel Muskatnuss in Begleitung von Zimt. Sehr reife, zerdrückte Bananen mit Bourbon Vanille sind ebenfalls - wenn auch eher im Hintergrund - zu schmecken. Wie im Geruch fehlen auch im Mund jegliche funky Noten.

Abgang
Die Süße setzt sich im Finish weiter fort. Sie bekommt weiterhin Unterstützung durch Zimt und Muskatnuss. Mit Fortdauer wird es etwas adstringierend und bekommt eine leicht bittere Note. Die Rosinen und die Bananen sind noch länger im Mundraum zu schmecken.

Fazit
Das Süßweinfass war sehr aktiv. Meine Güte, was für ein süßer Rumsirup - und dies wohlgemerkt ohne zusätzliche Süßung! Wer den Stil von Marco Bonn bei seinen A Dream of Scotland Whisky Abfüllungen kennt, sieht hier bei dieser Rumbastic Variante deutliche Parallelen, was den fast schon brachialen Fasseinfluss angeht. Ein Stil der polarisiert.

Für Puristen und Jamaika Aficionados ist dieser Rum sicherlich nicht der Richtige. Wer, wie ich, nicht soo auf den typischen Jamaika Funk mit seinem Hochesterkonzentrat und den damit verbundenen ölig, dreckigen Aromen steht, für den ist dieser Rum schon einen Versuch wert. Sicherlich nicht für jeden Tag. Aber zur passenden Stunde ist dies schon ein leckeres Dessert.

With A Dream of Scotland and The Fine Art of Whisky, Marco Bonn and the Brühler Whiskyhaus not only have successful single malt ranges at the start, but also their own brand for cask strength rum bottlings, Rumbastic. To date, I haven't had a Rumbastic bottling in my glass. This is now changing. I'm not really a fan of Jamaican rums, but I couldn't resist this complete bundle, a Worthy Park with a remarkable 15 years of maturation in a Mocatel cask.

As always with the Brühler Whiskyhaus, no colouring or sugaring was added. The alcohol content of 55.3% promises a lot in terms of flavour and potency.

Appearance

Nose
The Moscato cask has done a great job. The sweetness of the grapes lies over the glass like syrup. Powerful aromas of nutmeg, rum sultanas, cooked roasted apricots and plums as well as semi-dried figs. The actual Jamaican flavour can only be smelled after some time, and then rather in the background. Ripe bananas and vanilla are the main flavours. There is little left here for fans of typical Jamaican funk. The alcohol calms down after a few minutes in the glass and then provides an ideal base for the flavours.

Flavour
Extremely creamy and really like a viscous syrup, the spirit glides into the mouth. The combination of caramel and honey makes for a very sweet start, which is quickly given a tangy, slightly spicy anecdote by the alcohol. This is followed by the well-known notes of sultanas, dried apricots, figs, plums and plenty of nutmeg accompanied by cinnamon. Very ripe, crushed bananas with bourbon vanilla can also be tasted, albeit more in the background. As with the flavour, there are no funky notes in the mouth.

Finish
The sweetness remains in the finish. It continues to be supported by cinnamon and nutmeg. It becomes a little astringent as it goes on and takes on a slightly bitter note. The sultanas and bananas can still be tasted in the mouth.

Conclusion
The sweet wine cask has been very active. My goodness, what a sweet rum syrup - and without any additional sweetening, mind you! Anyone familiar with Marco Bonn's style in his A Dream of Scotland whisky bottlings will see clear parallels in this Rumbastic variant in terms of the almost aggressive cask influence. A style that polarises.

This rum is certainly not the right one for purists and Jamaican aficionados. If, like me, you don't like the typical Jamaican funk with its high-ester concentrate and the associated oily, dirty flavours, this rum is worth a try. Certainly not for every day. But at the right time of day, this is a delicious dessert.

Jamaika ist in der Rumwelt das schottische Islay in der Whiskywelt. Rum aus Jamaika hat durch seine hohen Esterwerte einen ganz typischen, einzigartigen Geschmack. Wie bei rauchigen Whiskys ist es auch bei Rums aus Jamaika, man liebt sie oder man hasst sie. Wer sich mit dem Thema Rum intensiver beschäftigen will, sollte zumindest einmal einen Rum aus Jamaika mit diesem besonderen Funk gekostet haben.

Die Abfüllungen von Appleton Estate sind hier vielleicht ein guter Einstieg in diese Aromenwelt. Sie verbinden meiner Meinung nach sehr gut diese speziellen Hochesternoten mit den, für den Einsteiger, typischen Rum-Aromen und kombinieren sie zu einem hocharomatischen Ganzen. Der Appleton Estate Rare Blend 12y war mein erster Berührungspunkt mit dieser Brennerei. Ein toller Rum. Der jüngere Bruder davon ist der 8y Reserve.

Er ist ein Blend aus Pot- und Column Still-Rums und wird mit 43% Alkoholstärke in die Flasche gefüllt. Der Rum wird aus Melasse erzeugt.

Aussehen
Terracotta

Nase
Dezente Anklänge der typischen Esternoten gleich zu Beginn. Weiters Ananas mit Bananenmus, Vanillecreme und Kokosraspeln. Stücke von einer reifen Ananas. Leichtes Prickeln und ein frischer Hauch vom Alkohol in der Nase. Insgesamt ein recht harmonisches Aromenprofil. Mit ein, zwei Tropfen Wasser tritt eine schöne Würzigkeit mit Muskatnuss, Currygewürz zu Tage.

Geschmack
Leicht süßer Antritt. Weiches, etwas wässriges Mundgefühl. Tropische Frucht mit leichtem Estereinschlag. Wieder viel Kokosnussraspeln mit Vanille und Milchschokolade. Leichte Würzigkeit vom Holz der Fässer. Im Geschmack ist der Alkohol sehr schön integriert. Ein Tropfen Wasser hilft beim Entfalten der Aromen.

Abgang
Die Vanille und die Kokosnuss ziehen sich länger im Geschmack, ansonsten recht kurzer Abschied. Schön wärmend im Finish, eine leicht bittere Note legt sich auf den Gaumen.

Fazit
Ein sehr runder, weicher Jamaikaner mit einem unaufgeregten dezenten aber delikaten Aromenspiel. Ester und ordentlich Vanille und Kokos dominieren im Geruch wie auch im Geschmack. Lässt sich sehr gut pur trinken, macht aber sicher auch in diversen Cocktails eine gute Figur. Der 12jährige größere Bruder ist jedoch was Aromendichte und Harmonie betrifft, für mich nochmals ein Stück höher zu bewerten, er kostet jedoch auch ungefähr € 10,- im Schnitt mehr.

In the rum world, Jamaica is like the Scottish Islay in the whisky world. Due to its high ester values, rum from Jamaica has a very typical, unique taste. As with smoky whiskies, it is the same with rums from Jamaica: you love them or you hate them. Anyone who wants to delve more deeply into the subject of rum should at least once have tasted a rum from Jamaica with this special funk.

The Appleton Estate bottlings are perhaps a good introduction to this world of aromas. In my opinion, they combine very well these special high star notes with the typical rum flavours for beginners and combine them into a highly aromatic whole. The Appleton Estate Rare Blend 12y was my first contact with this distillery. A great rum. The younger brother of this is the 8y Reserve.

It is a blend of pot and column still rums and is bottled at 43% alcohol strength. The rum is produced from molasses.

Appearance
Terracotta

Nose
Discreet hints of the typical estery notes right at the beginning. Further pineapple with banana puree, vanilla cream and coconut flakes. Pieces of ripe pineapple. Slight tingling and a fresh hint of alcohol on the nose. Overall, quite a harmonious aroma profile. With a drop or two of water, a nice spiciness emerges with nutmeg, curry spice.

Taste
Slightly sweet attack. Soft, somewhat watery mouthfeel. Tropical fruit with a slight estery touch. Again, lots of coconut shavings with vanilla and milk chocolate. Slight spiciness from the wood of the barrels. The alcohol is nicely integrated in the taste. A drop of water helps the flavours to unfold.

Finish
The vanilla and coconut linger longer on the palate, otherwise quite a short farewell. Nice and warming finish, a slightly bitter note settles on the palate.

Conclusion
A very round, smooth Jamaican with an unexciting discreet but delicate play of flavours. Ester and a good amount of vanilla and coconut dominate the smell as well as the taste. Drinks very well straight, but certainly also cuts a good figure in various cocktails. The 12-year-old bigger brother is, however, in terms of aroma density and harmony, to be rated a bit higher for me, but it also costs about € 10,- more on average.

Am Black Tot Day, dem 31. July 1970, wurde die letzte Rum Ration auf einem Schiff der britischen Marine ausgegeben. Der 2019 vom unabhängigen Abfüller Elixir Distillers herausgebrachte Black Tot Finest Caribbean Rum ist eine moderne Version der alten dunklen kraftvollen Navy Rums. Der Blend besteht aus Pot und Column Still Rums aus Guyana, Barbados und Jamaika und wird ungesüßt und ungefärbt mit 46,2% abgefüllt.

Aussehen
Helles Bernstein

Nase
Schöne dezente Süße und eine sehr markante Vanille gleich vom Start weg, bei der sich nach ein paar Minuten eine deutliche tropische Fruchtnote dazugesellt. Die Estereindrücke vom Jarmaikaanteil machen sich hier deutlich bemerkbar - helle Früchte wie Mango und Ananas. Dahinter klingen würzige Aromen mit Einschlägen von Kräutern und Gewürzen wie Muskat mit. Der Alkohol ist sehr gut integriert, kein unangenehmes Stechen ist in der Nase zu bemerken.

Geschmack
Ein cremiges Mundgefühl, weich und mit einer sanften Süße beginnt der Blend. Danach folgen Eindrücke von Vanille, Rosinen Zimt und Muskatnuss sowie einer leichten würzigen Schärfe von Pfeffer und Ingwer. Alle Aromen sind harmonisch mit einander im Einklang.

Abgang
Schön wärmend beginnt das Finish und setzt sich mittellang bis lange mit aromatischem Duftholz und leicht bitteren, an Milchkaffee erinnernde, Aromen fort. Dezente Noten von Rosinen und Vanille bleiben noch lange präsent.

Fazit
Sehr schöner Blend aus den drei verschiedenen Rumstilen. In der Nase dominiert vielleicht noch etwas mehr die fruchtbetonte Ester von Jamaika so wird es im Geschmack schon würzig und trotzdem fruchtig süß. Sehr positiv zu beurteilen ist, dass der Blend nicht nachgesüßt ist. Benötigt er auch absolut nicht. Tolles Aromenspektakel zu einem sehr attraktiven Preis.

On Black Tot Day, 31 July 1970, the last rum ration was issued on a British Navy ship. Released in 2019 by independent bottler Elixir Distillers, Black Tot Finest Caribbean Rum is a modern take on the old dark powerful Navy rums. The blend consists of pot and column still rums from Guyana, Barbados and Jamaica and is bottled unsweetened and uncoloured at 46.2%.

Appearance
Light amber

Nose
Nice subtle sweetness and a very prominent vanilla right from the start, with a distinct tropical fruit note joining in after a few minutes. The ester impressions from the jarmaica portion are clearly noticeable here - bright fruits like mango and pineapple. Behind this, spicy aromas with hints of herbs and spices like nutmeg resonate. The alcohol is very well integrated, no unpleasant stinging is noticeable in the nose.

Taste
A creamy mouthfeel, soft and with a gentle sweetness the blend starts. This is followed by impressions of vanilla, sultana cinnamon and nutmeg as well as a slight spicy heat from pepper and ginger. All flavours are in harmony with each other.

Finish
The finish begins nicely warming and continues medium to long with aromatic scented wood and slightly bitter flavours reminiscent of latte. Subtle notes of sultanas and vanilla remain present for a long time.

Conclusion
Very nice blend of the three different rums. In the nose, the fruity ester from Jamaica perhaps dominates a little more, but the taste is already spicy and still fruity-sweet. A very positive aspect is that the blend is not sweetened. It absolutely does not need it. Great aroma spectacle at a very attractive price.
